LAGOON
Lagoon is sea water bodies which parted from
main sea by sand, rocks, coral reef or island.

DELTA
Delta is island created by masive
sedimentation which occur in the rivermouth
in adjacent to sea or lake

SAND BAR
Sand bar is non permanent sand accumulation created
by sedimentation of sand, either from upland or sea in
a shallow beach adjacent to sea

Estuary Food Web
Estuary food webs begin with the
conversion of the sun’s energy to food
energy by plants and plankton. Simplified
feeding relationships are shown in this
diagram.

There are two main feeding pathways. One

begins with large plants such as
mangroves, seagrass and rushes. When
they die their leaves and roots are broken
down by bacteria and fungi to become
detritus. Detritus is eaten by small animals
such as snails, worms and shellfish and
they, in turn, are eaten by larger creatures
such as fish and birds.

A second pathway begins with microscopic

phytoplankton. They are eaten by tiny
zooplankton which then become food for
snails and shellfish.
The word "estuary" is derived from the Latin word
aestuarium meaning tidal inlet of the sea, which in
itself is derived from the term aestus, meaning
tide.

The most widely accepted definition is:

"a semi-enclosed coastal body of water, which
has a free connection with the open sea, and
within sea water is measurably diluted with
freshwater derived from land drainage".

* this definition excludes a number of coastal water bodies such as

coastal lagoons and brackish seas
A more comprehensive definition of an estuary is "a
semi-enclosed body of water connected to the sea
as far as the tidal limit or the salt intrusion limit and
receiving freshwater runoff; however the freshwater
inflow may not be perennial, the connection to the
sea may be closed for part of the year and tidal
influence may be negligible".

* This broad definition also includes fjords, lagoons, river mouths, and tidal
creeks.

The total small litterfall was 18.65 t/ha/y for upper
plants and 4.23 t/ha/y for lower plants, giving a total
number of 22.88 t/ha/y.
For upper plants leaf litter was by far the biggest
contributor (65.16 %), followed by reproductive parts
(15.48 %), wood (12.26 %), trash (3.23 %) and
stipules (2.58 %).
The amounts of nutrient returned through small
litterfall were estimated to be (kg / ha / yr): N 255.5,
P 41.0 and K 145.5.
