EARLY DEVELOPMENT
1801- First element of Local Government were established in Penang with the
appointment of a Committee of Assessors
1857- Local government was established in Penang and Malacca. Local
Government status of power confirmed by Municipal Ordinance
1893- Ipoh city council was established
1907- Sanitary Board was form in Kelantan.
1910- Johor Bharu Town was established
1929- Local Government Act was established by British in Malaya
1931- Local Government in Sandakan, Tawau and Labuan was formed and
known as Sanitary Board and replaced by Town Board
1950- Town Board to be converted to Town councils
1952- Local Ordinance was established
THE PERIOD AFTER INDEPENDENCE
There is too many local government during that time and were too small and weak of financial and lack of
support
1957- George Town become the first city within the Federation of Malaya, granted city status by Queen
Elizabeth II
Prior to Malaya independence from the British in 1957, there was a total of 289 units of local council
1958- There are 390 Local government units
Currently now there are a total of 154 local authorities in Malaysia and their breakdown are as follows:
(15 City councils, 39 Municipal councils, 94 District councils, 5 modified local authorities)
1965- Restructure local government begin with setting up Athi Nahappan Royal Commission
Prior to the 1973 restructuring exercise, there were 6 types of local governments. The total number of
local councils in Malaysia then was 418.
