“GROUP ACTIVITY”
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
1. How does earth stay warm and
comfortable in the coldness of space?
2. Name some greenhouse gases.
3. Are greenhouse gases important? Why?
4. Relate greenhouse effect to global
warming.
5. Discuss a situation where it can
increase the number of greenhouse gas
in the atmosphere.
•Rise in Earth’s
temperature
•By certain atmospheric
gases
•That trap the Sun’s
energy
•Water vapor (H2O)
•Carbon dioxide
(CO2)
•Nitrous oxide (N2O)
•Methane (CH4)
•Chlorofluorocarbon
(CFC)
•Heat would escape back into space
•Earth’s temperature would be -18 ºC colder
•Makes life impossible on Earth
Greenhouse Gas Natural sources Man-made sources

Carbon Dioxide Organic decay, Forest Burning fossil fuels –

fires, car
Volcanoes and factory emissions,
electricity generation
Methane Wetlands, Organic Natural gas & oil
decay,
extraction, Biomass
Termites
Burning, Rice
cultivation,
Cattle, Refuse landfills

Nitrous Oxide Forests, Grasslands, Biomass burning;

Burning
Oceans, Soils, Soil
of fossil fuels
cultivation; Fertilizers

Chlorofluorocarbons None Refrigerators; Aerosol

(CFCs) spray propellants;
Cleaning solvents
MAN MADE GREENHOUSE GASES
Along with natural processes, there are some man made
greenhouse keep on increasing in the atmosphere.
Burning of fossil fuels , coal , oil , natural gas
etc.
Deforestation
 Generate lot of CO2 disturbs the balance of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Use of aerosols , hairspray cans, plastics etc produce a
group of highly dangerous gas calledCFC which is
so harmful for atmosphere. Even small amounts can trap
a large quantites of heat , making the earth extremely
hot. This is known as global warming.
Some of the energy
passes back into
space

Green House Gases

CH4

Much of it remains
trapped in the atmosphere
by the greenhouse gases,
causing our world to heat
NOX +Co2 up
CFC NOx + Co2
Burning of NO+Co2
Oil, Petrol
CFC Engine
EVALUATION

gases comes from refrigerators &
aerosol spray propellants?
4. Which of the following words is
related to man-made sources of
greenhouse gas?

5. Which of the following greenhouse

gases is not a threat and can easily
turn to water?
6. __________ causes global warming by
way of cutting down of trees.

7. Without greenhouse effect, the Earth

will have an average temperature of
__________.

8. The ultimate source of heat energy

is the __________.
9. The __________ or CFC greatly causes
global warming and destroys ozone
layer.

10. Ozone layer is the part of the

atmosphere that blocks __________
rays to penetrate the Earth which
cause disease and less plant.
