CARD CLOTHING,

GEOMETRY OF CARD CLOTHING

AND MACHINE DRIVE
CARDING MACHINE:

OBJECTIVES:
 FIBRE TO FIBRE OPENING
 CLEANING
 REMOVAL OF DUST
 BLENDING
 DISENTANGLEMENT OF NEPS
 SLIVER FORMATION
CARD CLOTHING

TYPES OF CLOTHING:

FLEXIBLE CLOTHING

SEMI-RIGID CLOTHING

METALLIC CLOTHING
CARD CLOTHING
FLEXIBLE CLOTHING:

High point density

Less fiber damage

Cheap

Easily repaired
CARD CLOTHING
SEMI-RIGID CLOTHING:

 No need of sharpening after short

use.

 No dirt or dust is stored.

 No need of frequent grinding.

CARD CLOTHING
METALLIC CLOTHING:
 Teeth are metallic rigid.

 Works at different carding

angle.

 Does not require regular

grinding.
ZONES OF CARDING

 FEEDING ZONE

 LICKER-IN ZONE

 CARDING ZONE

 DOFFING ZONE

 COILING ZONE
ZONE 1 (FEEDING ZONE)

Lap Feed System

Chute Feed System
ZONE 2 (LICKER-IN ZONE)

 Intensive opening

 Speed 700m/min-900m/min

 Diameter of rollers is 250mm

ZONE 3(CARDING ZONE)
 Area of contact between the flats and
main cylinder.
 The surface speed of the cylinder may
range from 1000 m/min to 2400
m/min. whereas the diameter is about
1290 mm.
 Flats ( endless bars mounted on a
long endless chain ) are very close to
the main cylinder.
 Flats revolve with a very slow speed
as compared to the high speed main
cylinder in opposite direction to that
of the cylinder.
 Fibre to fibre opening and
parallelizing takes place in this zone
ZONE 4 (DOFFING ZONE)
 It is installed after Card and its main
purpose is to collect web from the
main cylinder.

 It is a cylinder of about 600-720mm

diameter and revolves at a speed
of about 300 m/min

 The differential speed results in

condensation effect.
ZONE 5(COILING ZONE)
 Coiling is processed by rotating
cans of variable diameters having
rotatable plates above them.

 The difference in speed between

the plate and the can which
causes coiling of sliver.

 Difference between under coiling

and over coiling
GRINDING
 Card proceeds operating treating the
fibers.

 Removing dirt with it .

 Progressively the wear and tear in the

clothing cause it to become a poor
cleaner.

 The purpose of this card grinding is

thus to maintain the projections in
card clothing in a sharp condition.
THE MACHINE DRIVE:
Old/Conventional cards have only one
drive motor.

This drives the taker-in and main

cylinder directly via belts and the other
parts via belts and gear transmissions.

Modern high-performance cards differ

from old cards that they include several
drives motor so that the individual regions
of the card are driven independently of
each other.
