typology
Definition

 A political party is a group of people organised together for the purpose of


winning government power by electoral or other means.
 Political parties are organised body with a formal card carrying membership.
 Political parties serve a vital link between state and civil society , between
institutions of government and the groups and the interest that operate
within society
Types of parties

Cadre Party - It originally meant a ‘ party of


notables’ .
Now , cadre party is used to denote trained
and professional party members who are
expected to exhibit a high level of political
commitment and doctrinal discipline.
Example Nazi party in Germany
Mass Party

The key feature of this party is thaybit places emphasis on broadening


Membership and constructing a wide electoral base.
These party reduce ideological baggage in order to appeal to the largest possible
number of voters.
Example Christian democratic party in Germany
Representative Party

They see their primary functions as being securing votes in election .


Thus they attempt to reflect rather than shape public opinion.
These parties are based on rational choice models of political behavior, which
portray poltician as power seekin creatures
Integrative party

They adopt proactive rather than reactive , political strategies . They wish to
mobilise , educate , and inspire masses rather than merely respond to their
concerns.
Example socialist parties
Constitutional party

Thi party acknowledge rights and entitlements of other parties and thus operate
within a framework of rules and constraints.
They respect electoral competition and realise they can be voted out of power as
easily as they can be voted into it.
Mainstream parties in liberal democracies have a constitutional character
Left wing
Left parties are characterized by a commitment to change , in the form of either social reform or wholesale
economic transformation.
They have traditionally drawn their support from the rank of the poor and disadvantaged.
They believe society is best served with the expanded role of government.
Right wing parties

These parties generally uphold the existing social order and are in that sense a
force of continuity. Their supporters usually include business interests and the
middle class.
Right wing believe that the best outcome for society is achieved when individual
rights and civil liberties are paramount and the role of government is minimised.
