the Visayas
3rd quarter – Arts & Crafts of Mindanao

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Arts

Why include a study and application of

theater and festival in the fourth quarter?

Theater is considered as a synthesis of all the art

forms.
Theater/festival/performance-making is a higher
order thinking activity.

Take note of competencies used in describing the

processes of coming up a showcase piece: mount,
devise, perform, improvise.

Basic Story-building

Each sub-group will select a traditional theater form

in the Philippines.

The members may select from the examples of

theater forms given during the lecture (shadowplay,
komedya, senakulo, sarswela, bodabil).

They may make use of other traditional theater forms

not included in the lecture.

Popular theater forms/performances found in nearby

provinces / communities where the workshop is
conducted, must be included in the selection.

Basic Story-building

Always start with a tableaux or a frozen image

as an introduction to each component of basic
story-building: Beginning – Middle – End.

Provide a good transition from one component

to another.

2. Each sub-group will improvise props and

accessories using art materials that will be
distributed. Make use also of malong, blankets,
balabal, table cloth and other available textiles
for improvised costumes.

(Note: This is a simulation of the lessons &

activities during the 1st to 3rd quarter. The art
outputs from each of the preceding quarter
may be used in the light of a pre-determined
showcase on the 4th quarter.

Things to Remember:

3. Read / Research!!!

Prepare well in handling the activities.

Read about theater forms in the Philippines. It

will be difficult to handle the training, if the
speaker had limited reading or research about
theater in the Philippines.

Things to Remember:

4. Though, the lesson on Theater and Festival at the

fourth quarter is geared towards the use or showcase
of artistic outputs from the previous quarters,
emphasize also the acting component in the
performance.

Acting is defined as “living truthfully under the given

circumstances of the scene.”

The same principle applies in conducting a showcase

of festivals, wherein the learners are expected to
demonstrate a certain level of conviction as regards
to what they are performing.
