 Filipino philosophy of life intertwined with people’s literature and oral tradition.

 Reflecting their cultural heritage, the Filipino way of life, philosophical perceptions, aspirations, values,
convictions, beliefs, and their way of doing things together, bears the past and is the life of the past in
the present.
 HEROES AND HEROINES
 The lives, works, and writing of our heroes and heroines, and local poets contribute to
philosophy.
 Jose Rizal, Apolinario Mabini, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Jacinto, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, Graciano
Lopez Jaena, Manuel L. Quezon, and Ninoy Aquino are the contributors from which we may
draw indigenous thoughts and values.
 However, the works of our heroes have not been fully explored so Dr. Rolando Gripaldo unfolds
the works of our national heroes to explore more about Filipino thought.
 SCHOLARS AND WRITERS
 Fr. Leonardo Mercado’s books attempt to uncover hidden patterns of Filipino thought from
words and expressions taken from the Philippine dialects.
 Fr. Alejo of the Society of Jesus also discerns the multiple meanings of loob to explicitate the
inner core of the Filipino personality.

 Myths, legends, parables, poems, epics, songs, beliefs, riddles, rituals, customs, folkways, native
dances, precepts, aphorisms, proverbs, fables, novels, plays, and maxims also contribute as source of
Filipino thought.
 OLD FOLKTALES
 Old folks have mastered the art of life and survival through inherent skills and talents; hence
why they have a lot to share about their own reflections on the mystery of human existence.
 But there also prayers, pasyon, komedia, duplo, senakulo, dula, balagtasan, and bukanegan that mirror
the life experiences and thoughts of the people
