Surds 09/07/2019

Entry Task

In your books, write down the first 12 square

numbers

Like this:

1 x 1 = 1
2 x 2 = 4
3 x 3 = etc….

Can you go any further without a calculator?

Learning Outcome
We are learning what surds are and how to simplify
them.

Surds

What is a surd?
A surd is a square root which cannot be
reduced to a whole number.
A surd is a number that uses a root sign (√), sometimes
called a radical sign. They are irrational numbers, meaning
that they cannot be expressed as a fraction
Examples:

√2 is a surd.
√5 is a surd.
√81 looks like a surd, but isn't really...however these
are still important when dealing with surds!

Surds

2 = 1.414213562......

•Too long to write.

•Never going to be fully accurate!

We leave it as 2 This is a
surd.

Surds

√2 = 1.4142135623730950488...
√8 = 2.8284271247461900976...

What do you think you get when you multiply these

two numbers together?

2 × 8 = 16

A general rule: 𝑎 × 𝑏 = 𝑎𝑏

Surds
Have a look at these two examples of simplifying a surd. Can you
see what is happening?

Using the square numbers you wrote down at the start, see if you
can simplify the surds on your sheet.

When done, swap with your partner and check their work, discuss
your answers.
