1.1 Network Definition

 A network can be defined as two or more
computers connected together in such a way
that they can share resources.

 The purpose of a network is to share

resources.

 Or just about anything else that exists on
a computer.

A network is simply a collection of computers or
other hardware devices that are connected
together, either physically or logically, using
special hardware and software, to allow them to
exchange information and cooperate. Networking
is the term that describes the processes involved
in designing, implementing, upgrading, managing
and otherwise working with networks and network
technologies.

Creating a Workgroup

 Go to “MY COMPUTER”, then right click, then click “PROPERTIES”

This opens the 'System Properties' window
Click the 'Computer Name' tab. You will be shown details about the
computer's description, name and workgroup.

If everything is correct then click 'Cancel' to close the window and then exit
the Control Panel.
Changing the Workgroup Name
On the 'Computer Name' tab described above there is a 'Change' button to allow you
to alter the name or workgroup of your computer.
Clicking this opens the 'Computer Name Changes' window.
 Edit the computer name if required. Each computer on the network must have a
unique name.
 Edit the Workgroup name to be identical to that of the other computers on the
network. The workgroup name is displayed in upper case regardless of how it was
entered.
 Click 'OK'. You will receive a "Welcome to the 'xyz' workgroup" message.
 Click 'OK', you will receive a "You must restart this computer for the changes to
take effect." message.
 Click 'OK' to return to the 'System Properties' window. There will now be a
warning message at the bottom looking like this:

 Click 'OK' and then exit the Control Panel.

 The computer will need to be rebooted for the changes to take effect.
Creating IP Address
To set a static IP address:
1. Open Windows Start menu.
2. Open Control Panel.
3. Classic view: Open Network Connections
Category view: Select Network and Internet
Connections, and thenNetwork Connections.
4. Double-click on your active LAN or Internet
connection.
5. Click Properties.
This opens the Local Area Connections Properties
window.

 In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and clickProperties.

This opens the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.

 In the General tab, click Use the following IP
address, and enter:
 - IP address. The static IP address you want to assign
to this computer.
 - Subnet mask. Subnet mask used by your router.
 - Default gateway. IP address of your router's default
gateway.
 In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter
all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router
uses.
 Click OK.
Assign the IP Address

Then:
•Click OK to close each window.
•Restart your computer.
•Then, check your IP address again, to make sure that the changes were applied.
Other way in Creating IP Address
To set an IP Address in XP right-click on My
Network Places and select Properties.

Right-click on the adapter you want to set the IP for and select
Properties.
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the
Properties button.
Now change the IP, Subnet mask, Default Gateway, and
DNS Server Addresses. When you’re finished click OK.

You will need to close out of the Network Connection Properties screen
before the changes go into effect.
Then you must click close to take
effect.
