Introduction & Background of the Study

■ Access control
■ Automation
■ Automatic gate control systems
■ Automatic Boom Barrier
Aim & Objectives

The aim is to design and install a modified automatic boom barrier.

The objectives are;
■ Design of the modified boom barrier
■ Implementation of the design,
■ Testing of the system
Problem Identification

Most facilities in our environment employs the use of physically manned gates and security
personnel, which are characterized by drawbacks such as;
■ Operation of the gate is time consuming,
■ Operation of the gate is quite boring and stressful,
■ Resources could be allocated for something more useful rather than gate manning etc.
■ No record of vehicles that are granted access to a facility
Justification & Significance of the Study

■ The primary motivation for this project is to provide a technical means of access control
in our local environment.
■ It is also to provide a means of taking inventory of vehicles that are granted access to our
environment.
Scope of the Study

The project is limited to;

■ Access control i.e. granting and restricting access
■ Taking inventory of vehicles that were granted access to the facility
The project doesn’t include video Surveillance, alarm system or incorporation of an
intercom system.

Methodology
Design of the modified boom barrier includes;
■ Design for the vehicle loop detector,
■ Design for the vehicle counter
■ Design for the Backup power supply
The specifications include;
■ Length of barrier=6m
■ Height=0.85m
■ Dimension= 100 x 50 mm
Working parameters;
■ Rated power = 120 Watts
■ Working power = 220V at 50/60 KHz
■ Working temperature = -35 to 80 degrees Celsius
Methodology
■ Typical detection height for a loop detector is 2/3 the shortest length of the loop in feet
■ Inductance of a 4-sided loop is L= P x (T2 x T)/4
■ The electronic counter
Backup power supply calculations;
■ KVA = KW/power factor
■ Backup Time = Battery AH x 12V x N x Efficiency of Battery / Load in Watts
■ Battery AH = (Backup time x Load in watts)/(12V x N x efficiency)
Implementation and testing.
