 LEARNING AND ITS THEORIES

 BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION
Learning is a key
process in human
behaviour. All living is
learning. If we
compare the simple,
crude ways in which a
child feels and
behaves, with the
complex modes of
adult behaviour, his
skills, habits, thought,
sentiments and the
like- we will know
what difference
learning has made to
the individual.

LEARNING IS THE PROCESS OF ACQUIRING NEW OR MODIFYING

EXISTING KNOWLEDGE, BEHAVIORS, SKILLS, VALUES, OR PREFERENCES
THEORIES:

BEHAVIORISM
Behaviorism is a learning
theory which considers
anything an organism do as
a behavior. According to the
behaviorist, these behaviors
can be scientifically studied
regardless of what happens
in the mind (psychological
constructs such as thoughts,
feelings…) As a theory
behaviorism focuses on
observable behaviors and
contends that there are no
philosophical differences
between publicly observable
processes (such as actions)
and privately observable
processes (such as thinking
 BEHAVIORISTS BELIEVE IN THREE BASIC ASSUMPTIONS:
and feeling.)
LEARNING IS MANIFESTED BY A CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR.
THE ENVIRONMENT SHAPES BEHAVIOR.
THE PRINCIPLES OF CONTIGUITY
COGNITIVE
THE COGNITIVE LEARNING THEORY EXPLAINS WHY THE BRAIN IS THE
MOST INCREDIBLE NETWORK OF INFORMATION PROCESSING AND
INTERPRETATION IN THE BODY AS WE LEARN THINGS.
This theory can be divided into two specific theories: the Social
Cognitive Theory (SCT), and the Cognitive Behavioral Theory
(CBT).
SOCIAL COGNITIVE THEORY:
 In the Social Cognitive Theory, we are
considering 3 variables:
 behavioral factors
 environmental factors (extrinsic)
 personal factors (intrinsic)
 These 3 variables in Social Cognitive Theory
are said to be interrelated with each other,
causing learning to occur. An individual’s
personal experience can converge with the
behavioral determinants and the
environmental factors.
CBT IS BASED ON THE IDEA THAT
HOW WE THINK (COGNITION), HOW
WE FEEL (EMOTION) AND HOW WE
ACT (BEHAVIOR) ALL INTERACT
TOGETHER.  SPECIFICALLY, OUR
THOUGHTS DETERMINE OUR
FEELINGS AND OUR BEHAVIOR.

THEREFORE, NEGATIVE AND

UNREALISTIC THOUGHTS CAN
CAUSE US DISTRESS AND RESULT
IN PROBLEMS.

COGNITIVE
BEHAVIOR THEORY
CONSTUCTIVIST
learning is a constructive
process in which the learner
is building an internal
illustration of knowledge, a
personal interpretation of
experience. This
representation is
continually open to
modification, its structure
and linkages forming the
ground to which other
knowledge structures are
attached. Learning is an
active process in which
meaning is accomplished
on the basis of experience.

CONSTUCTIVIST THEORY
BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION

 Behavior modification is a treatment

approach which is focused on changing
behavior. This method is based on the work of
Skinner, a well known psychologist who
developed the operant conditioning theory --
which suggests that behavior can be modified
by consequences and through reinforcement.
The major goal of behavior modification is to
replace undesirable behaviors with
acceptable ones. An underlying theme is the
belief that how people react to an object or
event can be modified by learning. This
Purpose
Behavior modification is
used to treat a variety
of problems in both
adults and children.
Behavior modification
has been successfully
used to treat
obsessive-compulsive
disorder
(OCD),
attention-deficit/hype
ractivity disorder
(ADHD), phobias,
enuresis (bed-wetting),
generalized anxiety d
isorder
, and
separation anxiety di
sorder
, among others.
