Presentation on State of Power Crisis

in Bangladesh
Course Title: Presentation Skill Development

Presented By
Rifat
Bangladesh is a country endowed with huge natural resources.
Bangladesh's per capita electricity generation of 464 kWh p.a. is
still among the lowest in the world. (Power cell, 2018).
Non-renewable energy
 Natural gas
 Oil from minerals and other sources
 Coal and coal like substance
 Compressed natural gas (CNG)

Renewable Energy
 Hydro-Electricity
 Solar Power Generation Using Solar Rays
 Wind-Mill Power Generation Using Wind Power
 Production Of Bio-Gas Using Waste
 In 1980- electricity demand was 30 Giga watt per 1000 Crore
taka of GDP which increased into 80 GW in 2002.
 With an economic growth of 12% on an average the capacity
for electricity generation should double every six years.
 For this projection of economic growth the generation of
electricity should increase 4 times to 20,000 MW by 2021.
Main reasons of Electricity crisis
Organizational structure, management and
policy
• average selling cost is lower than average production cost
• privatization take place in the case of urgency and emergency rather than
increase of efficiency of electricity

Corruption
• System loss occurs mostly due to the theft of electricity
• the use of bribes or other “facilitating payments”
• Cases against present Prime Minster and ex-Prime Minister

Insufficient funding (Govt. + Private)

USAID-SARI/Energy (2007): insufficient fund for electricity industry since its
emergence as electricity generation, transmission and distribution
Steps to be taken for removing the
problem of Electricity
New power plant installation

Increasing capacity of old power plant

• Fuel logistics;
• - Fuel availability;
• - demand profile;
• - Requirement for cogeneration (desalination, heat and steam uses for various
application
Reducing system loss
By controlling theft and proper maintenance
Ensuring maximum production of renewable energy basis power
• Solar Energy
• Biogas Energy
• Wind Energy
• Hybrid Power System
Inspiring non-government organization for power generation

Grameen Shakti (Solar and Wind)
Gas Crisis
 Total number of gas fields- 26
 Number of gas fields which are in production- 21
 Total reserve (proven and probable)- 38029.2 BCF
 Total proven reserve remaining- 27121.1 BCF
 Only for power sector the demand was 607 billion cubic feet
(Bcf) in 2017, which is expected to increase to705 BCF in
2020.
 Total demand of 2015 was 1233 BCF
 Production for 2015 was 973.2 BCF
Action Plan for the Development of Natural Gas Sector
• Adoption of time based action plan for discovering new gas fields

• Make BAPEX more effective in exploring oil and gas

• Speedy processing of tenders and signing agreements

• Approval for importing liquefied natural gas by private sector as an

alternative

• Reduce the supply of natural gas to those sectors where alternative

energy can be used

• Finalizing National Energy Policy and Coal policy to create opportunity for
using energy from multiple sources
Coal Crisis
• Coal provides 28% of our primary energy
• In 2020 - 50% of of power plant use coal to produce
10000 MW electricity
• 9,31,000 Ton production in 2013 and demand was
22,47,000 Ton
Steps to be taken for removing the problem of
Coal Sector
• Quick finalization of coal policy.

• Formation of coal extraction plan consistent with the demand

• Build up the mass awareness and mass involvement regarding the

extraction procedure of coal especially for the open extraction
method.

• If the coal extraction by open method from a coal mine is

economically viable, a plan has to be prepared about the
rehabilitation of the people

• Clarify the government position regarding coal import.
