 Water Shut off : Shutting or reducing water
production in oil or gas wells than cause reduction or
hindrance or block hydrocarbon production.
 Water cut : It is the ratio of water produced
compared to the volume of total liquids produced.
 CAUSES

 Channels behind casing.

 Barrier breakdowns.
 Completions into or near water.
 Coning and cresting.
 Channelling through higher permeability zones or
fractures.
 Fracturing out of zone.
 PROBLEMS

 Decline in potential oil production.

 Corrosion.
 Scale/salts deposition.
 Gas hydrate formation.
 Hydrocarbon solids deposition (asphaltenes and
waxes).
 Disposal of the water itself.
 METHODOLOGY
 Initial study on the oilfield, its geology and production performance to
understand the condition of the field.
 Location of the target well and analyse its production performances,
derivative plots to identify the cause of high water production.

 Analysis of the production performance and derivative plots to correlate the

conditions of the well.

 Analysis of the formation evaluation logs to identify the problem zone.

 Study on the history of the well to understand the present condition.

 Water shut-off job done on the target well and its current condition and
recommendations for further analysis.

 Laboratory analysis on the polymers alongwith cross linkers used in the

field to examine its gelation time and gel consistency.

 Recommendations for prevention of high water cut problems and revival of

the target well.
