Collection Maintenance Presented by Jocelyn G. Pagtama, RL John Ellison (1985) cited 3 major categories of selection procedures
The Halo System – this is the primary method used by
the librarian. It is characterized by the librarian unilaterally determining the content of the collection by selecting materials based on reviews, publisher’s brochures and bibliographies. The Social Responsibility Selection Procedure – This process is characterized by activist librarians who selects materials based on social problems of a given library community and is used to reflect clientele of any type of library. They tend not to wait until library users make requests to activate orders based on their feelings on local, state, and national social issues. Social responsibility librarians are usually aware of major social, psychological, and economic needs of the library community and select materials and develop programs on what they feel is good for the community. The Systematic Analysis Procedure – This combines formal needs, community analysis, and non-profit marketing methods to determine the information needs of a library community. This procedure puts the librarian in a process role. It is characterized by formal community’s systematic analysis to determine needs rather than the use of personal feelings or social issues as a criterion top select materials Size
