EFFECTS OF PLAYING

BASKETBALL ON THE
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
AMONG GRADE 12-MALE
EXECUTIVES
 Sports have become a major business and attraction for the Filipinos.
The print, television, internet, and cinema media have contributed to
the explosive popularity of both professional and high school sports
industry. It is not surprising, therefore, that the popularity of
professional and high school sports has been reflected in the sports
programs of Filipino high school.
 Basketball is known as the number one sport especially for the men.
Basketball players involved in court and field team sports face a broad
range of challenges that involve physical fitness, precision motor skills,
team tactics, individual and group motivation. Moreover, this sport
concluded that has its different effects on the physical and intellectual
health.
 The pressure to win and the allure of financial gain have always been
part of the ranking, as well as the high school sports scene.
Interhighschool athletics are a big business and a lucrative source of
revenue for many schools. It is not unusual to find that coaches in our
major schools make a great deal more income than tenured academic
performance as proposed in the study of (Williams, 2005). It is
therefore not surprising that a conflict has developed between the
athletic and academic communities on many of the nation's high school
campuses.
 Basketball appears to be an attractive aspect of high school experience
to many students as cited in the study of (Fisher, 2006). Fisher
conducted an investigation on the positive and negative correlates of
sports participation on inner-high school students. An anonymous
survey was distributed to 838 participants, where 55% were male and
45% were female. Of the 838 students who were interviewed, the
author found that all of them participated in sports some way. The
most common reported are enjoyment, recreation, and competition
were reasons for participation. The author also found a significant
percentage of students regarded sports and school are almost balanced
in terms of importance. Fifty-five percent and fourty-five percent fell
to that category and says that there are more youths play importance
of sports than school.
 (Fisher, 2006), found too that many of the students believed that they
would be extremely likely to receive an athletic scholarship.
Specifically, 52% of males and 20% of females reported that they would
most likely receive significant benefits from sports, thus ranking them
higher than school, was a troubling findings from the study. In addition,
the author indicated that almost half of the participants engaged in
sports, but that a significant percentage of them had unrealistic
expectations for their future.
 The effect of participation in basketball, with respect to its
direct effect on the participants themselves. (Taras, 2005)
conducted on investigation on high school students and the
effect that physical activity had on school performance. Taras
also concluded that there may be some short-term
improvements due to physical activity, specifically with
respect to concentration. A basketball player is a goal-minded
that he can apply in times of school-related activities to attain
good academic performance.

 This research topic plays important roles in high school

campuses especially to the students who play the sport
basketball. In the above explanation and findings show the
positive and negative side of the sport basketball especially on
the academic performance of the students. It also contains
other indicators of students' success. Studies have shown that
time, energy, management, physical and intellectual health
are good skills and performance in sports and schools.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

 This study is anchored in the Theory of Sports and Academics. It will

be applied in our research as proposed by (Cozby, 2001). By
implementing this theory, it suggests that participation in sports has
significant factors affecting the academic performance of high school
students. Theory of Sports and Academics may help in determining
the effects of basketball on the academic performance on the
respondents of this study.
 This part shows the conceptual paradigm of the study using
independent and dependent variables.
