This document discusses verbal and non-verbal communication. It begins by outlining the target outcomes of identifying verbal and non-verbal cues to communicate effectively, analyzing similarities and differences in communication behaviors across cultures, and performing a role play using verbal and non-verbal cues. It then explores the concepts that all communication, whether intentional or not, conveys a message and that messages can be conveyed verbally through speech or writing or non-verbally through body language, appearance, or tone of voice. The document proceeds to define and provide examples of verbal communication, non-verbal communication, the four types of verbal communication (intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, public), and the eight types of non-verbal communication (

TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY; • ANALYZE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES IN THE COMMUNICATION BEHAVIORS OF DIFFERENT CULTURES; AND • PERFORM A ROLE PLAY WITH VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL CUES. TURN UP YOUR KNOWLEDGE:
Think about the statement “You cannot
not communicate”. Do you agree or disagree? Tell you opinion to the class. Every action that you do is based on certain meaning that you really want to express, and that expression of your ideas is the message. The message may be either verbal (spoken or written) or non-verbal ( body language, physical appearance,or vocal tone) VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION Verbal Communication
Verbal communication refers to the use of sounds and
language to relay a message. It serves as a vehicle for expressing desires, ideas and concepts and is vital to the processes of learning and teaching. In combination with nonverbal forms of communication, verbal communication acts as the primary tool for expression between two or more people. Non- Verbal Communication
Behavior and elements of speech aside from the words themselves
that transmit meaning. Non-verbal communication includes pitch, speed, tone and volume of voice, gestures and facial expressions, body posture, stance, and proximity to the listener, eye movements and contact, anddress and appearance. TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION 1. INTRAPERSONALCOMMUNICATION • This form of communication is extremely private and restricted to ourselves. It includes the silent conversations we have with ourselves, wherein we juggle roles between the sender and receiver who are processing our thoughts and actions. This process of communication when analyzed can either be conveyed verbally to someone or stay confined as thoughts. TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION 2. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION •This form of communication takes place between two individuals and is thus a one-on- one conversation. Here, the two individuals involved will swap their roles of sender and receiver in order to communicate in a clearer manner. TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION 3. SMALL GROUP COMMUNICATION • This type of communication can take place only when there are more than two people involved. Here the number of people will be small enough to allow each participant to interact and converse with the rest. Press conferences, board meetings, and team meetings are examples of group communication. Unless a specific issue is being discussed, small group discussions can become chaotic and difficult to interpret by everybody. This lag in understanding information completely can result in miscommunication TYPES OF VERBAL COMMUNICATION 4. PUBLIC COMMUNICATION This type of communication takes place when one individual addresses a large gathering of people. Election campaigns and public speeches are example of this type of communication. In such cases, there is usually a single sender of information and several receivers who are being addressed. TYPES OF NON- verbal communication 1. Space and Distance We recognize the basic need for personal space, but the normative expectations for space vary greatly by culture. 2. TIME Do you know what time it is? How aware you are of time varies by culture and normative expectations of adherence (or ignorance) of time. Some people, and the communities and cultures they represent, are very time-oriented. 3. GESTURES
The meaning of gestures can be
different across cultures and regions, so it’s important to be careful to avoid misinterpretation. 4. BODY MOVEMENTS
Body movements can
complement the verbal message by reinforcing the main idea. 5. TOUCH Haptic communication is a branch of nonverbal communication that refers to the ways in which people and animals communicate and interact via the sense of touch. The sense of touch allows one to experience different sensations such as: pleasure, pain, heat, or cold. 6. PARALANGUAGE Paralanguage involves verbal and nonverbal aspects of speech that influence meaning, including tone, intensity, pausing, and even silence. 7. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
The human face is extremely
expressive, able to express countless emotions without saying a word. 8. ENVIRONMENT Environment involves the physical and psychological aspects of the communication context. More than the tables and chairs in an office, environment is an important part of the dynamic communication process. RECAP:
•WHAT ARE THE FOUR TYPES OF
VERBAL COMMUNICATION? •WHAT ARE THE 8 TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION? GRADED ROLE PLAY RUBRIC FOR THE ROLE PLAY PRESENTATION CRITERIA 4 EXCELLENT 3 PROFICIENT 2 ADEQUATE 1 LIMITED PARTICIPATION IN PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION PRESENTATION OF CHARACTER ACHEIVEMENT OF PURPOSE USE OF NON- VERBAL CUES(INVOICE, GESTURES, EYE CONTACT, PROPS, COSTUMES) IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY SCENARIO 1: Your best friend has body odor, but she doesn’t know about it. Many of your common friends have been talking about it behind her back and have started avoiding her. Your best friend is clueless about all these things. You as her best friend and as someone close to her, you decided that you will tell her the problem. How will you use words and non-verbal messages to communicate your messages to your best friend? SCENARIO 2: You accompanied your mother to obtain the final diagnosis about her disease. The doctor said that she has a cancer, and she is terminally ill. She only has approximately 6 months to live. Your mother told you not to tell the whole truth to your dad and to your siblings. She wants you to tell them that she has a cancer, but she is not terminally ill. What will you do? What will you tell your father and your siblings. SCENARIO 3: You have a girlfriend for 6 years. Lately, you felt that your feelings for her have changed. You do not love her as much as you did before. You actually proven that you have fallen out of love for her because you are very attracted and endeared to a girl whom you just met lately. You are sure that your feelings for this girl is so much more than your feelings for your girlfriend. To be fair to her, you decided that you will break up with her. How will you use words and non-verbal messages to communicate your message with your girlfriend? THANK YOU!
