OBLIGATION
Social Function:
to say something that must do because of a law,
rule and promise.
Text Structure:
 We must wear scout uniform every Friday.
 We must keep our class clean and tidy.
 You must remove your shoes.
 I must go to work on Saturday morning
Language Features:
Modal verb: must

S + must + verb infinitive + o/c

Note :
Must similar with have to.
Must cannot use to talk about the past and
future. When we use the past, or the future
with will, we need to a form of have to.
PROHIBITION
Social Function : The act of not allowing something to be used or done.
Text Structure :
 We mustn’t’t wear sandal to school
 We mustn’t’t be late for school
 They mustn’t’t talk during the exam

Modal verb: Mustn’t

behave.
Text Structure :
 We should start getting ready to go because the bus leaves at 4:00

 NOTE:
We can also use “had better” and “should have” to giving advice
 Be careful:
Should has multiple meanings. It can be used to express certainty, such
as, "He should be here by five o'clock." Should can be a substitute for t
he conditional word if. (VOA: Everyday grammar).
