Pre-Colonnial Philippines

WOMEN ENJOYED EQUAL STATUS WITH MEN

Women in the Precolonial Philippines shared

equal footing with men in the society.
During precolonial period, women have rights of
the following:

-allowed to divorce
-own and inherit property
-lead their respective barangays/territories
WOMEN ENJOYED EQUAL STATUS WITH MEN

-to be the working heads of the family

-to have sole right to name their children
-in terms of marriage, they could even retain
their maiden names if they want to
-and to head rituals mostly known as
"babaylans"
SOCIETY WAS MORE TOLERANT BACK THEN

Women back then had the power to say how

many children they wanted.

Homosexuals were largely tolerated.

Sexual Freedom

No prostitution existed until the Americans

introduced it to the country
THE PEOPLE ENJOYED A HIGHER STANDARD
OF GOVERNMENT
Way back to the time of Pre-Colonial
Philippines, our ancestors practiced an early
version of the theory made by Thomas Hobbes,
John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau which
was the Social Contract.

The people will pay tribute and will serve him in

both times of war and peace in return for the
ruler's protection.
THE PEOPLE ENJOYED A HIGHER STANDARD
OF GOVERNMENT
Another explanation to this reason is that the
people has all the power to choose their ruler.
And if the ruler became incompetent and will
not be able to fulfill his/her duties, the people
had he right to remove him.

The power of the ruler will always dominate but

the people have the right to remove him if he is
acting the other way
WE WERE SELF-SUFFICIENT SELF-
SUFFICIENCY IN PRE-SPANISH PHILIPPINES
Blessed with such resource-rich country, our
forefathers did not suffer from lack of food.

Forests, rivers, and seas yielded plentiful

supplies of meat, fish, and other foodstuffs.

Learned to till the land using farming techniques

that were quite advanced for their time
WE WERE SELF-SUFFICIENT SELF-
SUFFICIENCY IN PRE-SPANISH PHILIPPINES
They already had an advanced concept of grain
equity

Our ancestors took care of the environment well

WE HAD SMOOTHER FOREIGN RELATIONS

Before the Spanish galleon trade, the pre-

colonial Filipinos had already established trading
and diplomatic relations with the other
countries.

In lieu of cash, our ancestors exchanged

precious minerals, manufactured goods, etc.
with the other nationalities.
WE HAD SMOOTHER FOREIGN RELATIONS

Chinese were amazed at the pre-colonial

Filipinos.

Chinese traders often wrote about the Filipinos'

sincerity.

In fact, some Chinese, out of confidence, were

known to simply leave their items on the
beaches.
