How to Write

Chapter I – The
Problem and Its
Setting
TOPICS:
• Introduction
• Statement of the Problem
• Assumptions and Hypotheses
Introduction
The introduction formally brings in and establishes the
research study. It explicitly presents what the research
topic is all about and set the tone of the research.
(Young, 2013)
Following questions aid the researcher
in formulating the introduction;

1.What is the rationale of the problem?

2.What is the setting of the problem
3.What is the basic literature foundation of the
study?
4.How serious is the chosen research problem?
5.What is the general objective of the problem?
6.What is the overall purpose of the problem?
In writing the introduction, the
development of the research topic must be
written gradually , smoothly and logically
to the last paragraph. Make sure that the
last paragraph explicitly mentions the
rationale of the research , or the reason for
the research topic. Similarly do not forget
to mention your research topic on the last
paragraph.(Young, 2013)
Statement of the Problem
• It is a clear definition of a question raised for inquiry ,
consideration or solution.
• The opening paragraph of this section of the research
paper contains the general problem of the thesis.
• The general problem is followed by an enumeration of
specific problems. The problems are usually stated as
question the researchers seek to answers.
Assumption and Hypotheses

Hypothesis of the Study

• Hypothesis is a tentative prediction about the relationship
between two or more variables in a population under study
( Polit, 2007)
• Commonly used in an experimental type of research.
Two Types of Hypotheses

• Null Hypotheses
• Alternative
Hypotheses
Null Hypotheses

• It is better known as the hypothesis of the “status quo” or the

present thinking.
• Researches subjected to experimental testing generally use
the null hypothesis format.

Alternative Hypotheses

• It is better known as “ research hypothesis or the hypothesis

to be tested.
Assumptions of the Study

• The assumption of the study are statement

of suppositions that are presumed to be true
and therefore , need not be proven.
Note in writing Assumption of the
Study ( Young, 2013)
• Assumption need not be proven.
• Assumption are generally enumerated.
• No explanation have to be given for any of these
assumptions.
• And remember that you cannot assume something
that you are trying to prove.
Example:
Thesis Title: The relationship between psychosocial
Health Effects of Stress and the Coping Mechanism of
Nursing Student Mothers
The Following Assumptions are enumerated by the researchers:

1. Disorder can be acquired from abnormal stress response.

2. Different sources of stress can be managed through a healthy way of

response.

3. Managing stress with exercise can prevent physical and mental

negative health effects.

4. There are techniques and strategies to follow in order to be

successful in coping.

5. Psychological health effects of stress can be prevented by effective

coping mechanism of nursing student mothers.
