Western Visayas
Western Visayas is an
administrative region in the
Philippines, numerically
designated as Region VI. It
consists of six provinces:
Aklan, Antique, Capiz,
Guimaras, Ilo-Ilo, and
Negros Occidental
and to highly urbanized
cities (Bacolod City and
Ilo-Ilo City).
• The region is dominated by the native
speakers of four Visayan Languages:
Kinaray-a, Hiligaynon, Aklanon, and
Capiznon.
• The land area of the region is 20,794.18

km (8,028.68 sq. mi., and with a
population of 7,536,383 inhabitants), it is
the most populous region in the Visayas.
Literature
 Hiligaynon is the lingua franca of the West
Visayas in Philippines. The mother language of
West Visayas is Kiniray-a o Hiraya. The popular
literary artforms in Western Visayas are the
binalaybay or poem, the paktakon or riddle, the
sugidanon or story/ folktale, the banggianay or
debate, the hurobaton or proverbs, asoy or epic,
amba or songs, and the komposo or traditional
song.

Folk Songs (Komposo)
 Si Pilemon, Si Pilemon
It is a very light upbeat song that talks
about a fisherman who went out to sea but
come back with nary a catch.
 Dandansoy
It is Visayan Folk song that’s also sung as a
lullaby.

Music
Dandansoy
 is often confused with another Visayan song,
Condansoy. Dandansoy is a farewell song. It is
the name of the boy to whom the singer is
saying goodbye.
 This song is about the singer leaving
Dandansoy to go back to her hometown.
Si Pilemon, Si Pilemon
 is a lighthearted song about a fisherman’s
travels to catch the bounty of the sea and
returned empty handed
Ili-ili Tulog Anay
 Is a popular Hiligaynon or Ilonggo lullaby
whose composer is no longer known but has
been adopted by many generations that is why
it’s still survives until now. It is usually sung by
a sister or another female relative to keep a
child sleeping while the mother is away.
Dance
Ati-Atihan in Aklan
 Aklan is considered the country’s oldest
province believed to have been established
around 1212-1213 by settlers from Borneo. Every
third week of January, heed the call of the Ati-
atihan Festival and join the rythmic dancing of
participants who darken their bodies with soot
and don colorful tribal finery.
Binirayan in Antique
 Antique is home to the Binirayan Festival which
commemorates the landing of Bornean Datus led
by Datu Puti and Datu Sumakwel during the 13th
Century, a historical significance which brings
pride to Antiqueños.
Sinadya sa Halaran in Capiz
 Join in with the locals in street dances during the
Sinadya sa Halaran in Roxas City which literally
means “joy in sharing and giving” when rituals
and festivities of every town are captivated in the
weeklong celebration of fireworks, grand parade,
fluvial processions, fair and food festival and
exhibits.
Manggahan in Guimaras
 Manggahan Festival is a unique event celebrated
every April 16-20 for the sustained promotion of
the mango industry. The festival culminates in a
grand showcase of cultural festivals in an
apparent bid to show the world that there is more
to the province than its sweet, fiber and pest-free
mangoes.
Dinagyang in Iloilo
 Dinagyang Festival is Iloilo City’s version of the
Ati-Atihan Festival but is definitely impressive in
choreography and striking in terms of the various
attired worn by participating tribes which reflect
the ingenuity, craftsmanship and artistry of the
Ilonggos.
Masskara in Negros Occidental
 The Masskara is a combination of the English word “mass”
and the Spanish “kara,” meaning “face”. The festival which
depicts the steadfast character of the Negrenses is held every
third weekend of October up to October 19 when the city of
Bacolod celebrates its Charter Anniversary.

Contemporary Arts
This two paintings are from the Ilo-Ilo
Museum of contemporary art.
The exhibits space currently features
Gerran’s artworks from paintings to
sculptures about the Ilonggo general.

Directing Kapitan Tiago was not that
easy to mount as what I thought at first.
Among the plays in Ciento Cincuenta,
this dramatic piece had the most
number of cast members which meant
going through the hassle of blocking a
crowd in a limited space, preparing each
actor to focus and emotionally invest in
the scene, among others.
