Electronic Diesel Control (EDC)

 System Overview
 The system composed from three main categories: Sensors,
Electronic control unit, and Actuators, sensors supply the
control unit with information regarding the vehicle's
operating condition; the control unit evaluates these
information, and send signals to actuators in order to
control the fuel quantity.

1) Accelerator position (APP) sensor

 The APP sensor can comprise of a potentiometer, signals from the APP sensor
are used by the ECM to determine the exact accelerator position.

3) Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor

 This sensor contains a permanent magnet partly enclosed in a soft iron core and
partly in a field winding; the tip of the sensor is positioned close to the flywheel
ring gear, as the teeth or pins of the trigger wheel pass the sensor the magnetic
field changes, inducing a voltage signal which is sent to the engine control
module (ECM).

 2. Field winding
 3. Permanent magnet
 4. Flywheel ring gear
 5. TDC pin

4) EDC control unit

 The EDC control unit assumes the following tasks:-
 Regulate Injection quantity by sending control signals to the quantity adjuster.
 The EDC control unit calculates the commencement of injection depending on
the influencing factors such as, engine speed sensor, coolant temperature
sensor, needle lift sensor …etc, and issues the corresponding output command
to the commencement of injection valve in the injection pump.
 Regulate charge pressure and exhaust gas recirculation.
 Controlling the glow plug system and the auxiliary heater.
 Controlling the cruise control system.

5) Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor

 The engine coolant (ECT) sensor probe is immersed in coolant and changes its
resistance in proportion to engine coolant temperature changes. the sensor
incorporates a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor, which decreases
in resistance as the temperature rises.

 2. Housing
 3. NTC resistor

6) Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) solenoid

 To reduce the oxides of nitrogen emitted by the

exhaust, a proportion of the exhaust gas can be
returned to the inlet, manifold when operating
conditions allow, this is done by EGR.

9) Fuel injector (with needle lift sensor)

 It has an integral inductive sensor, at the commencement of injection the

magnetic setting pin moves upwards and induces an alternating current into the
sensor windings, this information, together with signals from the crankshaft
position sensor, is used by the engine control module (ECM) to measure the
injection timing.

 2. Sensor winding
 3. Pressure pin
 4. Electrical connector

12. Glow plug

 Glow plugs are used to raise the temperature in the combustion chambers to
enable the engine to be started in low temperatures. The glow plugs can also be
used during cold running to reduce harmful exhaust emissions, blue smoke and
knocking.

13. Glow plug warning lamp

 This is just to tell you that the glow plugs are heating up in readiness for a cold
start. You should wait for the light to extinguish before starting the engine.
