 Introduction
• One of Asia’s largest sewage treatment plants built at Bharwara Sewage
Treatment Plant In Gomti Nagar Lucknow
• It is been design for the capacity of 345MLD and extended in area about
120 Hectare
• The plant is basically based on the technology of Up flow Anaerobic
Sludge Blanket Technology (UASBR)
• The plant reduces toxic level of waste water i.e., reduces factors like BOD
, pH, Sulphide and fluoride content
 UASB Technology
• UASB technology is based on Anaerobic process.
• 3-phase separation device is the most characteristics feature of UASB reactor.
• Wastewater flows upwards through a sludge blanket located in lower part of
reactor, while upper part contains a three phase (solid, liquid, gas)separation
system
• It Facilitates the collection of biogas and also provides internal recycling of
sludge by disengaging adherent biogas bubbles from rising sludge particles.
• Superior settling characteristics of granular sludge allows higher sludge
concentrations and consequently permitted

 Screening
• Screening is the first unit operation
used at wastewater treatment plants.
• Pre-treatment is done in screens and
grit chamber.
• Screening removes objects such as
rags, paper, plastics, and metals to
prevent damage and clogging of
downstream equipment, piping, and
appurtenances.
 Grit Chamber
• Grit is sewage consist of coarse particles of sand ash and clinker egg shells
bone chips and many inert material in organic nature.
• Grit chamber consists of a cylindrical tank in which the flow enters
tangentially creating a vortex flow pattern.
 Chlorine Contact Tank
• The effluent received after polishing pond will be disinfectant in chlorine
tank with a dose of approx 5 mg/l of chlorine gas dosing.
• The chlorine contact time has been kept about 30 minutes.
• The chlorine gas is contact with the treat the sewage and will be capable to
remove the faecal coliform by chemical reaction.
• It is hoped that MNP will reduce below 10000 per hundred ml by the
application of chlorine gas.
 Pre-Aeration Tank
• Pre aeration tank has been produced
to aerate the effluent from UASB
reactor to release the trapped gases.
• Aeration remove sulphide.
• The pre-aeration may also be useful
to change the anaerobic nature
effluent of UASB to aerobic.
 Conclusion
After the commissioning of 345 mld STP at Lucknow it is hoped at the Gomti
river will get rid of pollution of wastewater of nallas that effect the health of
Gomti river will improve with the increase of Dissolved Oxygen in the river
and not only the life of Lucknow will improve but also aquatic life will survive
in Gomti, the life line of Lucknow.
