 The DEQ2496 is a powerful, very cost effective tool for a lot of

different tasks. We will use it only for measurement of frequency
responses from speaker systems.

 GKJTU will get 1 system

Frequency Response
Good Results - Low Ohm vs. 100V

Frequency response of a 2,5 dB

good full range speaker
(low ohm techn., 8 Ohm). AVRG
Sufficient for normal
worship during church 15 dB
service and of course
really good for speech
Bass range is not really
necessary for worship
and of course not
necessary for speech

Frequency response of a
100V-system.
Good for speech. AVRG
However low-mids are
missing for worship. 15 dB

Frequency Response
Good Results – Bass & Subwoofer

2,5 dB
If you use bass or
subwoofer speakers
AVRG
then you MAY give the
bass a small boost
(max. 3dB) by tuning the 15 dB

volume of the bass

speaker. Be careful not
to do more than is really
AVRG
helpful for good sound.
In this case listening is
15 dB
better than measuring.

FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Introduction

 The FBQ1000 is a feedback destroyer which can be used as

equalizer
 12 full parametric filters per channel
(full parametric: frequency, gain and width can be set)
 Filter-width is measured in 1/60 octaves, up to 2 octaves
Remember: The range 20 Hz … 20kHz is 10 octaves
 You may
 set Parametric filters manually (equalizer mode)
 use automatic filters during the service (will be lost when turning power off)
(use those filters in automatic mode which are not required for sound
improvement)
 set automatically single shot filters before the service
(will be lost when turning power off)

FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Starting

 Ensure no parameter is selected

 Select Preset 4 (all filters in mode PA, Parametric EQ) :

 Turn the Jog Wheel until 4 is shown

 Store this to Preset 1 :

 Press STORE (STORE and the numeric display is flashing)
 Turn the Jog Wheel to select 1
 Press STORE again (display/STORE are not flashing, settings are stored to preset 1)

 Now you are in Preset 1

 Ensure only one channel is active – select a channel

FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Setting the Filters

 Press FILTER SELECT to select a filter with the Jog Wheel

 Select Frequency and Bandwidth

 Press the FREQUENCY button, select frequencies in steps of 1/3 octave
 Press the FINE (1/60 OCT) button for fine-tuning the frequency (in steps of 1/60 oct.)
 Press the BANDWIDTH button, select 1/60 … 120/60 (= 1/60 … 2 octave),

 Press the GAIN button for adjusting the gain

 Normally use attenuation only
 If you want to use gain, then only with bandwidth 120/60.

 STORE your settings

 Press the STORE button twice to store settings in current preset

FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Use Gain for 10 Octaves

 Because these filters have a max. bandwidth of 2 octaves you

need more than 1 filter if you want to use constant gain over the
whole frequency range

 Use these settings for a gain of about 8 dB

FREQUENCY 50 200 800 3.2 12.5
FINE 0 0 0 0 0
BANDWIDTH 120 120 120 120 120
GAIN +7 +6 +6 +6 +8

 Adapt the gain just by using lower values for gain

FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Copy Your Settings for Backup

 The FBQ1000 has 10 Presets, which can be used to store your

settings to a second preset.
 If someone “plays” with some buttons you can easily get back your settings

 Ensure no parameter is selected

 Assume your settings are stored to Preset 1 :

 Turn the Jog Wheel to select preset 1
 Press STORE (STORE and the numeric display is flashing)
 Turn the Jog Wheel to select preset 10
 Press STORE again
numeric display/STORE are not flashing, settings are now stored also in preset 10

FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Do not expect too much… (1)

 FBQ1000 used as equalizer

 The filters of equalizer are used to adapt the speakers to the environment.
In the FBQ1000 the width of the filters can be set from 1/60 to 2 octaves and the
12 mid-frequencies can be set also.
This is more powerful than a standard 31-band graphic equalizer.

 The function “feedback destroyer”

 A feedback destroyer analyses the signal continuously. If there is a strong frequency
within the signal (1 frequency is much stronger than any other frequency), then the
automatic function sets a very narrow filter with strong attenuation and cuts out this
frequency.
 If some frequency areas are louder than the rest because of bad equalizer
setting, then the feedback destroying function can not work properly.
 If there are 2 very loud frequencies at the same time, then the feedback destroyer
does nothing. This is because he can not decide which frequency to cut.
© Jürgen Schilling GoodSound GoodSound_12 Sound Improvement.pptx 2019-07-03 page 21
FBQ1000 Feedback Destroyer
Do not expect too much… (2)

 Possible improvement with a feedback destroyer

 If anything was done well and the feedback destroyer was used to search for critical
frequencies and cut them out, then you may have maximum 3-6db "gain".
This means you may be able to rise the output by max. 3-6dB.
 Anytime you change positions of microphones, then the critical frequencies may
change. You would need to search again for critical frequencies.
 Pre-condition for this is a proper setting of the equalizer.

 Resume
 A feedback destroyer is not plug & play.
If you use it, then the feedback is not gone, it is only a little bit more far away …
Do not expect, “with a feedback destroyer there is no feedback anymore”.
 The large step to tear feedback down is a proper setting of the equalizer.

FBQ2496 Feedback Destroyer
Introduction

 The FBQ2496 is a feedback destroyer which can be used as

equalizer
 20 full parametric filters per channel
(full parametric: frequency, gain and width can be set)
 Filter-width is measured in octaves
Remember: The range 20 Hz … 20kHz is 10 octaves
 You may
 set Parametric filters manually (equalizer mode)
 use automatic filters during the service (will be lost by turning power off)
 set automatically single shot filters before the service
(will be kept when turning power off)
 The number of parametric filters has to be set before usage

FBQ2496 Feedback Destroyer
Set Up

 Press the PEQ button for a few seconds.

 The Display will show the number of parametric filters
(p 0 = no parametric filters / p20 = all filters are parametric)
 Turn the wheel to set the number of parametric filters.
 Pressing the button completes the procedure.

 Press the left/right button for a few seconds

to switch off the stereo-mode
 Pressing this button briefly will toggle between left/right

 All other buttons need to be “off” (no LED lights up)

FBQ2496 Feedback Destroyer
Setting the Filters

 Briefly press the PEQ button

 The selected filter is displayed i.e. 19 (left/right is indicated on the respective button)
 You may change the filter with the wheel
Selected single shot- or automatic filters can’t be changed but you can read them

 Briefly press the frequency button and adjust the frequency

 Briefly press the bandwidth button

 Values: 1 = 1/60 octave … 5 = 5/60 octave,
all values with a decimal dot shows the bandwidth in octaves, i.e. 1.5 octaves
(Remember: The range 20 Hz … 20kHz is 10 octaves)

 Briefly press the gain button for adjusting the gain

 Use attenuation only
 With Bandwidth 10 octaves, you can set the gain for the complete signal.
