Fragments & Phrases
Review

 Fragments are group of words which does


not convey complete thought.
 Dependent clauses are fragments which has
an S-V combination but do not convey
complete thought.
 Phrases are fragments which has no S-V
combination (only subject or verb at a time
or sometimes just nouns) and no complete
thought.

 Infinitive (Subject, DO, Compliment,

Correcting Fragments
 Using fragments is a common error in both written
and spoken communication. People tend to use
fragments in informal spoken conversations. As a
result, this error is also common in writing.
Ronald: Sam, what did you have for breakfast?
Sam: Oh. Bread and butter. And a cup of brown
coffee.
Peter: Jayson, let’s watch the latest movie tonight.
Jayson: I can’t. Too many school projects to
accomplish. Trying to beat the deadline.
Correcting Fragments
1. If the fragment is introduced by a subordinating
conjunction (that makes it a subordinating clause or
dependent clause) connect it to an independent
clause.
 Fragment: Before the holiday season ends.
 Possible
revision: Most shopping malls will have
gone on sale before the holiday season ends.
 Beforethe holiday season ends, most shopping
malls will have gone on sale.

 Because she left the door open.
 Although the trip was fun.

2. Avoid starting the sentence with a coordinating
conjunction. Combine sentences using coordinators
(FANBOYS).
 Fragment: The employees are all rallying for a
minimum wage increase from the management. But
isn’t economically ready to accommodate their
demands yet.
 Possible revision: The employees are all rallying for a
minimum wage but the management isn’t
economically ready to accommodate their demands
yet.

3. Add the missing subject and/or verb. Phrases
cannot stand alone. They must be a part of an
independent clause.
 Fragment: Tried the zumba class in the gym
today. It's quite fun. (No Subject)
 Possible
revision: We Tried the zumba class in the
gym today. It's quite fun.
Correcting Fragments
 Fragment: The new residents of the townhouse.
(No Verb)
 Possible revision: The new residents of the
townhouse will be given an orientation on club
policies.
 Fragment: Across 5th Avenue. (No Subject &
Verb/Prepositional Phrase)
 Possible revision: The holy procession takes the
shortest route across 5th Avenue.

4. Verbal phrases cannot stand alone. They have to
modify something in the sentence or act as a subject.
They do not function as verbs.
 Fragment: Reading some classic pieces. (Gerund
phrase)
 Possible revision: Reading some classic pieces
allows us to understand the past.

 Fragment: Using the simple language. (Gerund
phrase)
 Possiblerevision: Using the simple language,
Geoffrey Chaucer wrote his masterpiece.
 Fragment: To dream wide awake. (Infinitive
phrase)
 Possible revision: To dream wide awake is not a
sin.

Correcting Fragments
5. Modify the sentence. Merge Ideas or delete
unnecessary words or phrases.
 Fragment: In our class today, we learned the basic
principles of Physics. Also, how we can apply it to
practical life.
 Possible
revision: In our class today, we learned the
basic principles of Physics and its practical
applications to life.
