THERMAL POWER PLANT (TPP)

• Converts energy content of an energy carrier (fuel) either into

heat or electricity or both.

• Coal is the largest source of fuel for electricity generation.

• 60.8% of electricity in India is generated from coal (As on 24-08-
2015)*

• Efficiency of conventional TPP: 33-48%.

HARDUAGANJ THERMAL POWER
STATION

• It is located at Qasimpur Power House Colony - 18 Kms from Aligarh Railway Station.
• All units are coal fired, having a total generating capacity of 665 MW.

Generating capacity Equipment

• * (MW) Manufacturer
5 60
7 105 M/s Bharat Heavy
8 250 Electricals Limited
9 250
Total 665

• The coal to all these units is fed from coal mines of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL),
Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) by means of railway.
• Government decided in July 2014 to add another unit of 660 MW that will be
constructed by Toshiba.

(BFP) (CEP)

Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which
drives an electrical generator. After it passes through the turbine, the
steam is condensed in a condenser and recycled to where it was
heated; this is known as a Rankine cycle.

Circulating Water System

• Provided for supplying clarified water to the condenser for condensing the LP turbine
exhaust steam.
• May be of once through type or closed type (uses cooling tower).
Cooling Towers:
• Mechanical induced draft type or natural draft type.
• Hot water(60-70˚C) gets cool to 30-35˚C and runs down in forebay.
• For each unit (8 no. & 9 no.) there are 12 cells and 24 risers.
Cooling Water Pumps:
• CW pumps supply cold water from forebay to condenser at flowrate of 36000 mᶟ/h.
• 2 pumps for each unit and 1 common standby pump.

Water System
Water Treatment Plant

• Clarifier Tank:
Water Treatment Plant

• De-mineralised(DM) Water:
• It is exclusively used to generate steam.
Hydrogen Generation Plant
(Generation not started yet)

• 99.9% pure hydrogen gas is used in cooling of generator.

• Current requirement of H2 is met through H2 cylinder.
• Airox Nigen Equipment Pvt. Ltd.
• Electrolysis is used for H2 generation.
Fire Protection System

• Installed by Lloyd Insulation Pvt. Ltd.

• Provided to protect the plant against fire damage to avoid loss of life and
property.
• Clarified water is used for fire fighting service.
• 2 tanks each of capacity 1100 m3 is dedicated for this system.
Fire Pump House:
• 3 Spray pumps (7 kg/cm2). Used in case of electric fires
• 2 Jockey pumps (1.5 kg/cm2). Used to maintain line pressure.
• 2+2 (electric + diesel) hydrant pumps (>7 kg/m3).
Fire Protection System

Booster Pump House:

• Connected in series with hydrant pumps, increases the pressure up to 15
kg/cm2.
• 1+1 electric and diesel.
Foam Pump House:
• A foam tank and a pump.
• Water + foam mixture form aq. film on burning oil surface thereby cutting
O2 supply.
