Compressive Strength is the
ability Of material or structure to carry the loads on its surface without any crack
or deflection. A material under compression tends to reduce the size , while in
tension , size elongates.

Compressive strength formula

for any material is the load applied at the point of failure to the cross section area
of the face on which load was applied.

Compressive Strength=Load/Cross-sectional Area

For cube test cubical moulds of size 15cm x 15cm x 15cm are commonly used:
1-) Remove the specimen from water after specified curing time and wipe out
excess water from the surface
2-) Take the dimension of the specimen to the nearest 0.2 m
3-) Clean the bearing surface of the testing machine
4-) Place the specimen in the machine in such a manner that the load shall be
applied to the opposite sides of the
cube cast.

5-) Align the specimen centrally on the

base plate of the machine

6-) Rotate the movable portion gently by

hand so that it touches the top
surface of the specimen

7-) Apply the load gradually without

shock and continuously at the rate of
140 Kg/cm^2/minute till the specimen
fails

8-) Record the maximum load and note

any unusual features in the type of
failure
1. Size of the cube=15cm x 15cm x15cm

2. Area of the specimen(calculated from the

mean size of the specimen)=225cm sq.

3. Characteristic compressive strength (fck)

=

4. Expected maximum load = fck x area x f.s

5. Applied Load = 5.2 Kn/sec

1. Maximum load applied =616 kn

2. Peak Compressive Strength=(Load in N/

area in mm sq)=.27.37 Mpa Or N/mm
sq.
1) 1-Identification Marks-dated as 2|04|15

2) 2-Date of test- 31|01|2019

3) 3-Age of specimen-2 years 9 months (as

from 2|04|2015)

4) 4-Appearance of fractured faces of concrete

and the type of fracture if they are unusual-
Columnar vertical cracking through both
ends , no well defined cones on both ends
Using this machine we calculate the following-

1. Compressive Strength= 616 Kn

2. Maximum stress= 27.37 Mpa

3. Cross-sectional area=225 sq m

So , it is found that the given specimen is of M30 grade of concrete.

SLUMP TEST

 Concrete slump test or slump cone test is to
determine the workability or consistency of
concrete mix prepared at the laboratory or the
construction site during the progress of the work.
Concrete slump test is carried out from batch to
batch to check the uniform quality of concrete
during construction
.
 The slump test is the most simple workability test
for concrete, involves low cost and provides
immediate results. Due to this fact, it has been
widely used for workability tests since 1922. The
slump is carried out as per procedures mentioned
in ASTM C143 in the United States, IS: 1199 –
1959 in India and EN 12350-2 in Europe.
Equipments Required for Concrete Slump Test

Mold for slump test i.e. slump cone, non porous base plate, measuring scale, temping
rod. The mold for the test is in the form of the frustum of a cone having height 30 cm,
bottom diameter 20 cm and top diameter 10 cm. The tamping rod is of steel 16 mm
diameter and 60cm long and rounded at one end.
•Procedure for Concrete Slump Cone Test
•Clean the internal surface of the mould and apply oil.
•Place the mould on a smooth horizontal non- porous base plate.
•Fill the mould with the prepared concrete mix in 4 approximately equal layers.
•Tamp each layer with 25 strokes of the rounded end of the tamping rod in a
uniform manner over the cross section of the mould. For the subsequent layers,
the tamping should penetrate into the underlying layer.
•Remove the excess concrete and level the surface with a trowel.
•Clean away the mortar or water leaked out between the mould and the base
plate.
•Raise the mould from the concrete immediately and slowly in vertical direction.
•Measure the slump as the difference between the height of the mould and that
of height point of the specimen being tested.
Calculations-

Using formula find volume of frustum:

V= p h/3(R^2 +r^2 +R.r )

V=3.14*30/3{(10)^2 + (5)^2 + 10*5}
V=3.14*10(100+25+50)
V=3.14*10*175
V=5495 cubic Cm
V=0.0055 cubic M

Density of concrete =mass/volume

Mass = 2400 * 0.0055
Mass = 13.2 Kg

Adding 10% of mass= 13.2 +1.32= 14.5 Kg

= 15 Kg
QUANTITY OF INGREDIENTS-

For M20 Grade of concrete

Ratio = Cement : Sand : Aggregate

Ratio = 1: 1.5 : 3

Solving –
x+ 1.5x +3x= 15
1.5x=15
x=2.72 Kg

So
cement contain= 2.72 Kg = 2.8 Kg
sand contain= 4.08 Kg = 4.2 Kg
Aggregate contain= 8.16 Kg = 8.4 Kg

If water/cement Ratio = 0.42

Quantity of Water= 0.42 *2.8

=1.176 Kg
= 1176 ml
