 Bequick but don’t hurry. Remember: judges

start here.

 Understand the news peg or feature angle

 Usethe key word system: select key words

from story (but don’t parrot lead)

 Fornews heads: play it straight, summarize

the news
 Forfeature heads: be creative. Tease, flirt,
hint-but don’t give away lead.

 Avoid lazy headline writing. Don’t settle for

your first try, then change type size to make
it fit.

 Don’tfall in love with your own cute,

creative puns. The challenge: rewrite and
make it better.

 For
school paper – seek the input of others:
How can the headline be misread? Does it
work?
 Listen to the lone ranger: honor the courage
of one brave soul who objects. One person
who doesn’t “get it” now represents
thousands who won’t get it later.

 4. The TACT test: Taste-Attractiveness-

Clarity- Truth (Ask these questions of
each headline)

 Is it in good taste? Anything offensive in

any way? Can anything be taken a wrong
way?
 Does it attract the reader’s/judge’s
attention? How can it be improved without
sacrificing accuracy?

 Does it communicate clearly, quickly? Any

confusion? Any odd words, double
meanings?

 Isit accurate, true? Proper words used? Is

the thrust of subject-verb true?

illliteracy program education curriculum.

 TheDepEd created the Media literacy

Task force (MNLTF) to develpe a
National Media Literay Education
proram (NMLE) curriculum that would
help childrens understand and handle
media,
 “Our children help in developing their skill to
distinguished good news frm bad news and
good programs from bad ones,” Valisno
explained.
 Studies conducted in 2009 by Cartun Network
New Generations Philippines: the 2008 AC
Nielsen kids study: and the 2002 PCTVF
Media Violence Study reported the
prevailence of TV viewing among children
and youth.
 “It was reflected in the 2009 study that
twent six % of filipino childrengoes on line
every day, 50% of which use the Internet for
their homework, : valisno said.

second year Joas Abalos,and grade five
student April abalos believe that this is
one good way for her child to be educated
by the media.

 “It
is hard for them to teach me about
the positive and negative effects of
media because I, myself are not even
aware of these, she said in Filipino.
 Abalossaid the aducating chilldren about the
effects of media will be more efective if
these are thought in school school. “It would
be easier for them to undestand and grsp
this knowledge because the informations will
be coming from thr teachers” she said

 The NMLE when complete, is set to be

intergated in the Basic education Curriculum
under social Studies for the elementary level
and under English/Communication Art/Values
for the highschool level hopefully this coming
school year.
 Micah Vianne Santarin , a first year
student in Imus National High school in
Kawit Cavite, said that the additionasl
curriculum should be examine very well
before it is implementation. We barely
have enough time studying our lessons
when we ARE IN SCHOOL, If thgere is
additional topics to be discussed, we have
lesser time to learn about the major
subject, she expalined in Pilipino.
 Santarinsaid that it is a good thing that the
students will be caught about the reverse
effects of media. “But I thoikn they (DepEd
and the goverment) should pay attention
second to our basic needs such bigger
clessrooms and quality texboks,” she said.

 “Medium learning resources will also be

developd for the use in public schools, she
said.
