THE TRIAC

TRIAC

The TRIAC is a semiconductor electronic component with three terminals

to control the current. Its name comes from the term TRIode for
Alternating Current = Triode for Alternating Current.
Basic Operation

Is to close a contact between two terminals (anode 1 and 2) to let the

current flow (output current) when a small current is applied to another
terminal called "gate" or gate (activation current).
characteristics

● The TRIAC is bidirectional.

● is a switch capable of switching alternating current.
● It has three electrodes: A1, A2 (in this case they lose the
anode and cathode denomination) and door.
● the triac changes from the cut mode to the driving mode when
current is injected
In FIG. (a), the waveforms show the triac during the first 30 of each half cycle, during
these 30 the triac behaves like an open switch, during this time the voltage of the
complete line falls through the main terminals of the triac, without applying any
voltage to the load. Therefore, there is no current flow through the triac and the load.

FIG. (b) shows the same waveforms but with a higher trigger delay angle.
TRIACS SHOOTING METHOD

Direct Current Alternating Current

Shooting Shooting
(DC shot) (AC shot)
Direct Current Shooting
(DC shot)
This trigger system is the one normally used in electronic circuits fed by continuous
voltages whose function is to control a current from a certain excitation signal,
which generally originates in a transducer of any type.

The triggering by alternating current can be done by using a transformer that

supplies the trip voltage. Colloquially, it could be said that the TRIAC is a switch
capable of switching the alternating current.

Applications

There are multiple uses of the triac, but to

name a few:

● For light regulators.

● For speed controls of an electric fan.
● For the control of small appliances.
