Introduction

• Mrs. Stephanie Yorke (syorke@schools.nyc.gov/ syorke@ps166.org)

o Third year at PS 166
o Previously taught for three years in New Jersey
o Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Teachers
College, Columbia University
o Gifted Extension from Hunter College
o Bachelor’s Degree from Binghamton University
o From Buffalo, NY
Goals of the Classroom
• Develop a caring and respectful classroom.
• Foster independence and make sure students feel
comfortable taking risks when participating in
activities and completing assignments.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of the
students.
• Teach the Next Generation Learning Standards for
4th grade.
Homework Policy
• In order to be successful, homework must be completed!- Math homework
will be given out daily.
• Students will copy down their homework
• Homework should be done in a minimally distracting area. They should be
completing their homework in an area where they can concentrate and not
be distracted by anything else.
• Please make sure name and class are on all homework.
• Homework is always checked within a 1-4 day window

No Stress Policy…Homework should be a priority, however, life happens and

sometimes you can’t get your homework done. If this happens, please let me
know the next morning and have a plan to make up the work.
Communication Folder
• Students all have a red folder that will be
used for communication between home
and school
• Students should put all notes, flyers and
homework in folder
• Parents should check folder every night!
Morning Routine
Classroom Procedures
• Students are expected to enter the classroom quietly and begin unpacking.
• All backpacks, coats, sweaters, and any other outdoor wear should be hung neatly in the classroom closet. Students are not
allowed to keep such items at their desk.
• Lunch bags are stored in the marked bins by the classroom door.
• Homework and any other important notes for Mrs. Yorke should be given to Mrs. Yorke or put in designated bin.
• When students have completed unpacking, they are to follow the directions listed on the Smartboard.

Leaving the classroom for Specials or Lunch

• All tables must be cleared.
• Students are to be silently waiting to hear their table being called.
• All chairs must be pushed in before getting on line.
• There is no talking on the line.
• Follow line leader and teacher out.

Hallway Behavior
• There is NO talking in the hallway.
• Students need to be in their line spots and walking appropriately.
• Line leader will stop at each landing of steps and wait to hear teacher directions.
• When waiting to enter prep, students line up quietly and wait for prep teacher to call them in or teacher direction.
Classroom Procedures (cont.)
End of Day
• Students must copy down homework and take out any necessary materials needed for homework.
• Once a table is called, students should collect their mail from the mailboxes and retrieve their items from the
closet.
• Once the table area is neat, students are to put up their chairs and wait to be called to line up.

Dismissal
• Students attending “ReCreate” will line up first, followed by students who self dismiss, then students being
picked up.
• Hallway behavior is expected while walking downstairs
• The class will stop at the security desk to dismiss students attending after school.
• The remaining students must stay in line and follow Mrs. Yorke to our designated spot.
• NO student can leave without seeing Mrs. Yorke first
• You must high five or shake hands with teacher before being dismissed.
Math Expectations
Math Rotations (Differentiated based on Unit Pre-Assessment):
• Mini Lesson
• Independent
• Center

• Bring all needed materials

• Listen and participate
• Quiet transitions

Mini Lesson:
• Bring notebook, pencil and only needed materials to the meeting area
• Be an active listener, asking questions once the teacher has modeled
• During guided practice, solve then discuss mathematical reasoning with a partner and record
answers in notebook
Math Expectations
Independent:
• Stick/glue in differentiated problems
• Students solve the problems independently for first 10 minutes
• Mathematical reasoning must be discussed during last 5 minutes with partner

Center:
• Work in pairs or as a group (depending on game)
• Voice volume needs to be that only group hears them
• Follow directions and stay on task
• Show mathematical thinking in notebook
• If unclear about a problem, discuss it with group first before approaching the teacher
Also Math Journal Tasks, Number Talks and Screeners are a part of our
math block

• Ideally, by the end of October in 4th grade, students

should be fluent in:
• Addition and Subtraction through Screener 4 (addition
and subtraction of multi-digit numbers using the
standard algorithm)
• Multiplication through Screener 1 (multiplication facts 0
- 10)
• Division through Screener 1 (division facts 1 - 10)
Additional Information
• Tool Kit- Each mathematician received a toolkit (plastic bag) with many
supports. I hope that every student uses the toolkit for assistance with all
tasks. The kit is expected to be transferred back and forth daily to assist with
all math assignments. It is kept in blue folder.

Daily Tasks- Whether it is homework or in-school task, all work is expected to

be completed in pencil. If the mathematician completed the problem
incorrectly, they will be expected to revise their work in PEN. Mathematicians
are always expected to revise their work to support their proficiency and
understanding of each concept.
*Please have your child bring in a blue pen
Notebook Checks

Randomly I will be checking

notebooks for neatness and
organization, content accuracy
and work shown. Organization is
an important life skill, which I
would like to support them with
through their mathematical
journey this school year.
Daily Notes

Before the class begins each lesson, they are

provided with notes which explains that day’s
lesson/ skill. It breaks down each strategy. In
addition to their toolkit, the daily notes are a
great tool to support them on homework and
review activities. It will be glued into their
Math Rotation Notebook
Mid Unit/ End of Unit overview
After each check-in/ assessment, I will send home a
breakdown of how your mathematician did on each
assessment. The mid-unit is always provided with the
assessment and tools to support your mathematician's
revisions. Mathematicians are expected to revise their
assessment in BLUE pen **Please remember to detach the
bottom of the overview and send back signed.**

Science Units
Amplify Curriculum Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards

Unit 1: Energy Conversions-Blackout in Ergstown.

Students take on the role of systems engineers for Ergstown, a fictional town that
experiences frequent blackouts, and explore reasons why an electrical system may fail.
They obtain information from science books and system models to learn about types of
energy, energy sources, energy transfer, and energy conversion. They define engineering
problems related to the town’s electrical system and design wind turbines using what
they have learned about energy and matter.
Science Units
Unit 2: Vision and Light-Investigating Animal Eyes. Students investigate why
there is a decline in the number of Tokay geckos living in one area of a rainforest
in the Philippines. They plan and conduct investigations and analyze data related to
animal senses to figure out cause-and-effect relationships between environmental
changes, the parts of an animal’s vision system, and the animal’s ability to see well.
They make models and write explanations to share what they learn about how
animals’ body structures perform functions related to senses and survival.
