CRITICAL READING

It is a technique which involves


analysing the claims presented
in the text.
CRITICAL READING
This kind of reading requires
you to do processing by
making judgments on the
author’s message.
Reading Critically
Means you think critically while
you read. You do not readily
accept the message but you
decide which one to accept
or which one to reject.
Reading Critically
To be able to do this, you need
to bring your own experience
and perspectives to your
reading.
Explicit Information

Information directly stated in


the text.
Implicit Information

The ideas which you need to


infer.
CLAIMS
The central argument or thesis
statement of the writer. This claim is
what the author is trying to prove
by providing explanation, details,
and evidences.
Types of Claims

1. Claim of Fact
2. Claim of Value
3. Claim of Policy
Claim of Fact
States that something exists. In
using this claim, a statement is
either proved or disproved. The
writer has to provide evidences to
prove his claim.
Claim of Fact
In analysing a claim of fact, you have
to ask is this statement true or false,
how can be claim be verified.
Example:

Computer games improve the logical skills


of the gamers.
Claim of Value
Quantifies an argument. In using
this claim, a proposition is judged
whether it is good or bad,
beneficial or detrimental, justified
or unjustified, worthwhile or
worthless.
Claim of Value
In proving the claim of value, you have to
ask yourself the questions like what
qualities should be considered in deciding
whether the proposition is good or bad
Example:

The effect of violent tv programs on the


minor is bad.
Claim of Policy
Asserts that something has to be
done as a solution to a particular
problem. It is easy to identify a
claim of policy because it begins
with words like should, ought to,
must.

In analysing a claim of policy, it is
important to ask questions like is
the claim of policy suggest the
best solution to the problems? How
does the claim solve the problem?

Context of Text Development

In analysing the context of a


written text, it is important for
you to identify intertext and
hypertext.
Intertext

Happens when an author


borrows or cites an idea from
another text.
Intertext

The cited texts contain a


context which was also
borrowed from other texts.
Intertext
So, intertextuality is a dialogue
among different text and
interpretations of the writer, the
reader and context.
Hypertext

It is related with the manner of


reading a text online.
Hypertext
It is text on a computer screen
or other electronic devices
with references (hyperlink) to
other texts which the reader
can immediately access.
Critical Reading as Reasoning

Enables you to examine the


validity and the strength of the
material you are reading.

Counterclaims are defined as


a statement in opposite to the
claim presented.
