CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM
CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM

Standard Deviation z-score

Properties of Sampling Distribution
or
Central Limit Theorem
1. Sample mean is equal to the population mean.

2. Sample standard deviation is equal to the standard deviation of the

population divided by the square root of the sample size,

3. It will tend to have a normal distribution, regardless of the shape of

the population.
Example 1
A population of size N = 250 has μ = 76 and standard deviation of
σ = 14.

1. What is the probability that a random sample of size n = 35 will have a mean of
79 or more?
Find σx̄ Convert x̄ =79 to z-score
ANSWER
The probability that a random sample of size
n = 35 will have a mean of 79 or more is
0.0823 or 8.23%
Example 2
A population of size N = 250 has μ = 76 and standard deviation
of σ = 14.

2. What is the probability that a random sampe of size n = 140 will have a
mean of between 74 and 77?

Find σx̄ Convert x̄ =74 and x̄ =77 to z-score

ANSWER
The probability that a random sample of size n
= 140 will have a mean of between 74 and 77 is
0.0805 or 89.05%
Example 3
A population of size N = 250 has μ = 76 and standard deviation of
σ = 14.

3. What is the probability that a random sample of size n = 219 will have a mean of
less than 76.5?
Find σx̄ Convert x̄ =76.5 to z-score
ANSWER
The probability that a random sample of size
n = 219 will have a mean of less than 76.5 is
0.9357 or 93.57%
Exercise
1. According to a study, the average number of hours of TV
viewing per household per week in the Philippines is 50.4 hours
and the standard deviation is 11.8 hours. If a random sample of 42
households is taken, what is the probability that -
a. the sample average is more than 52 hours?
b. the sample average is less than 47.5 hours?
c. the sample average is less than 40 hours?

2. The psychomotor retardation scores of 1500 manic-depressive
patients were found to be normally distributed with a mean of
930 and a standard deviation of 130. If 64 patients were randomly
selected, what is the probability that -
a. the patients scored between 800 and 1100?
b. the patients scored less than 800?
c. the patients scored greater than 1200?
Individual Work
The heights of a group of boys are normally distributed with a
mean of 54 inches and standard deviation of 2.5 inches.

1. What percentage of the population would have heights between 53 inches

and 56 inches?
2. If a boy is chosen at random from this population, what is the probability
thst he is taller than 52 inches?
3. If all possible samples of size 25 are drawn from this population, what
percentage of them would have means between 53 inches and 55 inches?
4. If a random sample of size 81 is drawn from this population, what is the
probability that the mean of this sample is larger than 53.5 inches?
