- The Holy Spirit makes the Risen Christ


sacramentally present in our midst and
make the believers come together and
work as one community bonded
together in the worship of God and in
the duty to continue Christ’s mission
today.

-God wills that we know Him,
worship and love Him as a
community

-God calls us to struggle in life


not in isolation but in communion
with His people.
NATURE & MISSION OF THE CHURCH

- Vatican II describes the Church as the People


of God
-The Church is a community of people… united
in one faith in Christ and His spirit of love (CFC
1355)
-all members of the Church are called to
struggle against human frailties and focus on
their interrelationships and mutual helpfulness
as children of God

1)The Church is both human and Divine

Human because
- it exist in time,
- operates within human means and
structures and
- is subject to the elements of history.

Divine because of its origin, nature and
mission
- arise from the creative design of the
Father, the redemptive mission of Jesus and
the sanctifying work of the Spirit.

The Church is like Jesus- human and Divine

2) The Church is the Sacrament of Christ

Sacrament- a material sign that makes


present a spiritual reality
- Material signs- Scripture, sacraments, saints,
ministries etc)

*The Church brings Christ in our midst


through all its material signs.

- We, as the body of Christ and embodied


spirits, we help make present the
mission of Christ by carrying out our
mission from Jesus using our human
means, talents, resources and roles in
the Church
MISSION OF THE CHURCH
The Church carries out a mission that:
a. Addresses the physical and spiritual aspects
of human life.

-the mission of the Church is primarily spiritual


- It concerns itself with issues pertaining to
food, wages, transportation and other temporal
things that have bearing on the human moral
and spiritual life.

b. Touches on both personal and structural evil of


society
*Structural injustice is rooted in personal sin.
- The Church focuses on the interior conversion of
heart (personal transformation)
- It aims authentic personal conversion which
leads to a genuine commitment to social
transformation.

SUMMARY:
To be relevant to the demands of time, - --the
Church addresses both physical and spiritual
aspects of the people and touches on the
personal and structural evils in society.

-it condemns our individual sins and moral


failures; and the unjust structures within our
exploitative culture.

PCP II ( Second Plenary Council of the


Philippines)
-convened in 1991
-looked into the effort of making Jesus’
mission and the Gospel relevant in Phil.

PCP II envisioned itself to be:
-a Church of the poor
-a Community of Disciples committed to a
renewed and integral evangelization

“The Church must be a fully participating


community of faith, rooted in Christ and
immersed in the life of the Filipino people, a
servant Church in solidarity with Filipino
concerns (PCP II)

The Church’s Two Ways of Doing its
Social Mission
1.Acts of Charity /works of mercy
-give alms to beggars
-donate clothes and food to calamity victims
-visit sick friends
*directly helping those in need or when we
work to correct the evil effects of social
problems
• Rooted in the very example of Christ.
- Jesus healed the sick, fed the multitudes,
ate with the outcasts, and performed
miracles.

*The early Christian communities translated the
love that Jesus taught them into acts of care
- They took care of the widows, orphans and the
poor
- They shared their possessions with one another
(Acts 4:32-37)

*The Church has taken the approach


to serving the LEAST, the LAST, and
the LOST
-direct approach to its social mission.

SOCIAL CHANGE APPROACH

Parish pastoral Council for Responsible
Voting ( PPRCV)
-the Catholic Church actively participates in
fostering honest and just local and national
elections
-it encourages dioceses/parishes to help
educate the voters, advocate honest
elections and guard the electoral process
