INTRODUCTION

• As one of the largest cities in India, and as a result of its


many colleges and universities, Pune is emerging as a
prominent location for IT and manufacturing companies to
expand. Pune has the seventh largest metropolitan economy
and the sixth highest per capita income in the country.
• Pune’s rapid industrialization in recent years has led to an
increased demand for construction workers. With the boom in
trade and commerce, the middle class has grown, creating a
demand for jobs such as maids, gardeners, security guards and
rag pickers. In recent years streams of people have moved from
rural areas to Pune. All such factors give rise to slum
formation.
• Slum population makes positive contribution to the city economy
by active participation in productive activities. Efforts must be
mobilized to control the future growth of unhygienic slums and
improve living condition of the people. The physical and social
well being is also of paramount importance in the growth of the
city.
• Many researchers have derived general housing strategies for
urban dwellers, but there is no such housing strategies for provide
affordable housing and basic amenities to the slum dwellers.
• In city of Pune, 32.5% of total population is residing in slums
within old city limits in 2011. According to projections, an
additional 33 lacs of people in Pune will need 3.5 lac homes
by the year 2027. Considering the current scenario and the
need for slum redevelopment,area from Pune City was
selected.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Aim: To study a slum area and plan for it’s Redevelopment for it’s
transformation into a smart city with basic facilities.
Objectives
• The following objectives are framed for the study under the
project:
• To study the existing scenario and socio-economics of slums of
proposed zone of city Pune.
• To recognize issues facing rehabilitation of slum in the study
area.
• To evolve a suitable shelter strategy model on the lines of a
Smart city for the rehabilitation and redevelopment of the slums
dwellers of Pune city in general and the selected zone as
particular.

MASHAL
• Distressed by the plight of the urban poor in search of
housing and livelihood in cities, in 1985 a few likeminded
architects, urban planners and social workers came
together to establish MASHAL.
• MASHAL is a non-governmental organization striving since
1985 to usher in development of the destitute irrespective
of caste, class, sex and religion. It mobilizes and organizes
slum dwellers to improve their living conditions. We
execute schemes which integrate multidimensional,
multilevel, and dynamic understandings of poor people’s
livelihoods.

• Pune, the cultural capital & educational centre of
Maharashtra & Pimpri Chinchwad,the renowned
industrial hub of the state having 28% and 14.78 % of
population residing in the slum respectively.
• The slum dwellers in these fast growing twin cities
are contributing the development of these cities but
they are forced to reside in unhealthy and unhygienic
atmosphere.
• Hence the "Slum Rehabilitation Scheme" of the
Government of Maharashtra looked after by
SRA,Pune.
