ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
HEAT TRANSFER: Heat Transfer is a discipline of thermal engineering that
concerns the generation, use, conversion, and exchange of thermal energy
and Heat between physical systems.
 Heat transfer occurs in three modes. Three modes of heat transfer are
thermal conduction, thermal convection and thermal radiation.
 Conduction: it occurs when two object at different temperatures are in
contact with each other. Heat flows from the warmer to the cooler object
until they are both at the same temperature.
 Convection: it is the transfer of heat within a fluid by mixing of one
portion of the fluid with another.
 Radiation: Thermal radiation is electromagnetic radiation generated by the
thermal motion of charged particles in matter. All matter with a
Temperature greater than absolute zero emits thermal radiation.
HEAT EXCHANGER
Heat exchangers are the devices that facilitate the exchange of
heat between two fluids that are at different temperatures while
keeping them from mixing with each other. In heat exchangers,
there are usually no external heat and work interactions. heat
exchangers differ from mixing chambers in that they do not
allow the two fluids involved to mix.
TYPES OF HEAT EXCHANGER
DOUBLE TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER
• A double pipe heat exchanger is one of the simplest form
of Heat Exchangers.
• The wall of the inner pipe is the heat transfer surface.
• The major use of these HX is sensible cooling or heating
applications.
• But Very long, even for moderate capacities.
• Unviable to accommodate in an industrial space.
• To make a Unit Isotropically Compact, the arrangement
is made in Multiple Times and Continuous Serial and
Parallel flow.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION
Enhanced heat transfer surfaces can be used for three
purposes:
 To make heat exchanger compact(small in size) in
order to reduce their overall volume, and their cost.
 To minimize the pumping power required for a given
heat transfer process.
 To increase the over all heat transfer coefficient U
value of the heat exchanger, that mean increasing in
efficiency of process & system.
AIM OF ENHANCEMENT
OBJECTIVE
 An attempt is made in this project work to do the design of double
tube heat exchanger with helical fin and vortex generator by
modeling in CATIA V5 R20 and meshed using Auto desk meshing
software.
 The analysis is done by AUTO DESK SIMULATION CFD 2015
software by using COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNIMICS (CFD)
and to find the various countours of Temperature, pressure and
velocity profiles across the double tube heat exchanger with helical
fin and vortex generator by evaluating the performance and
compare the all the parameters if various contours of vortexes by
keeping helix angle constant

MODELLIING
Introduction To CATIA V5
Computer Aided Three Dimensional Interactive Application, CATIA V5 was developed by
Dassault systems from France. CATIA V5 with a completely reengineered next generation
CAD/CAM/CAE software solution for product life cycle management (PLM). CATIA V5
delivers innovative technologies for maximum productivity and creativity from the inception
concept to the final product. CATIA V5 reduces the Learning curves as it allows the flexibility
of using features based and parametric design.
The Sketcher Workbench: The Sketcher workbench contains a set of tools that help you create
and constrain 2D geometries. Solid features such as pads, pockets and shafts are created or
modified using these 2D profiles.

Profile tool bar: allow you to create simple geometries

(rectangle, circle, line, etc...) and more complex geometries
(profile, spline, etc...).
Operation toolbar: commands such as trim, mirror, chamfer,
and other commands located in the Operation toolbar.
Constraint toolbar: Profiles may be constrained
with dimensional (distances, Angles, etc...) or geometrical (tangent,
parallel, etc...) constraints using the commands located in the
Constraint toolbar.

MESHING

Prior to running an Autodesk Simulation CFD analysis, the geometry is broken up into
small pieces called elements. The corner of each element is a node.
The calculation is performed at the nodes. These elements and nodes make up the
mesh.
In three dimensional models, most elements are tetrahedral: a four sided, triangular-
faced element. In two dimensional models, most elements are triangles
