SECTION-A
Probability
How likely something is to happen.

Many events can't be predicted with total certainty.

The best we can say is how likely they are to happen,
using the idea of probability.
• Tossing a Coin:---
When a coin is tossed, there are two possible
outcomes:
heads (H) or
tails (T)
We say that the probability of the coin
landing H is ½
And the probability of the coin landing T is ½
• Throwing Dice :---

When a single die is thrown, there are six

possible outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
– The probability of any one of them is 16
In general:
Probability of an event happening = Number of ways it can
happen/Total number of outcomes
Concepts of probability
1.Random experiment:-- 2.Out come:--
Random exp refers to a The result of Random
situation where erratic, on experiment is usually referred
specific and arbitrary results as an out come
can be obtained Example:--
Example:--
3.Event:--
An event is a possible
outcome of an experiment
or a result of trial

a) Simple event:--
The probability of happening or
non-happening of a single
event is considered as a
simple event

) Compound event:--
b
If the joint occurrence of
two or more event is
considered then it is
known as compound
event
4.Mutually exclusive:-- 5.Non-Mutually exclusive:--
When two events cannot When two events occur
occur simultaneously simultaneously in a single
in a single trial then such trial then such events are said
events are called as mutually to be non mutually exclusive
exclusive events events
Example:- Example:-
6.Collectively Exhaustive:-- 7.Equally likely:--
Collectively exhaustive events Events are considered as
are those events whose equally likely events when the
totality contains all the probability of occurrence of
potential outcomes of a all the events is equal
random experiment Example:-
Example:-
8.Independend events:-- 9.Dependent events:--
Two are more events are Dependent events are the
considered as I.E, events in which the
when the outcome of an occurrence or non-occurrence
event does not influences and of one event in any one trial
is not influenced by the other influences the probability of
event occurrence of other events in
Example:- other trial
Example:-
10.Complemenary event:--
Two events are said to be
complementary events if they
are mutually exclusive and
collectively exhaustive
