CASE STUDY
An Empirical method to answer
HOW and WHY questions

 Real-life contexts

 In-depth, rather than broad

 Individuals, groups, populations

 Specific locations or objects

CASE STUDY
 When we need to know
what the story is before we can get
anywhere with it and get beyond it
(Parker, 2005)

 A basis for a call or course of action

(e.g. evidence-based intervention)
How to do your Case Study
1 CHOOSE A HAZARD TOPIC FOR YOUR GROUP:
Volcanoes
Earthquakes
Typhoons, Floods, Storm surges
Landslides
Fire/Wildfire
OTHER STEPS
2 Look for sources of information on:
Disasters related to the Hazard that have
taken place (Media/Individuals or
Communities affected)

Characteristics of the Hazard (Science)

Risk Assessment and Monitoring (Science,
Social Science, Local Knowledge, Vulnerable
Persons/Groups)
METHODS for DATA COLLECTION
 Must be systematic and thorough
 Qualitative and/or Quantitative

 Observation

 Interviews – structured/unstructured

 FGDs – focused

 Records and similar documents

NEXT STEPS
3 Develop STRATEGIES OF MITIGATION OR
PREPAREDNESS

 Use the different frameworks for DRRM

 Consider VULNERABILITIES and EXPOSURE
factors
 Be scientific but also creative

4 Identify your AUDIENCE

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The goal of the video project is to
inform and persuade people to act
safely using primarily visual
communication
The case study project will provide
the right information about
hazards using a report format or
infographic
CASE STUDY AS BACKGROUND FOR
VIDEO PROJECT
 Choose a Specific Hazard as your case
 Use the case study findings to
determine the relevant Call for Action
 Create the ff for your Call
Setting Point of View
Audience Story/ Plot
Tone
CASE STUDY PROJECT
 Illustrates in specific details a real
event, person, organization, or action

 Components:
 SITUATIONER
 ASSESSMENT
 RECOMMENDATIONS/CALL FOR
ACTION
CASE SITUATIONER
DETAILS of the CASE
The SUBJECT (eg Volcano)

The Subject’s BEHAVIOR as a Hazard

The CONTEXTUAL Conditions

CASE ASSESSMENT
ANALYSIS of CAUSAL FACTORS

 Requires your interpretation of the data/findings from

your investigation

 Data needs to be integrated for a valid and novel or

creative interpretation

MITIGATION AND PREPAREDNESS

Different frameworks will guide you in
deciding your strategy in getting

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION
The eruptions of Mount Pinatubo and their continuing aftereffects have disrupted the flourishing
socioeconomic environment in Central Luzon. Economic growth, which had been spreading to the
region from Manila of former U.S. military bases, has been weakened by the eruption. The auspicious
development picture for the region has been replaced by uncertainty and delays. For the short and
medium term, rehabilitation and reconstruction dominate socioeconomic planning; for the long
term, planning needs to take advantage of new opportunities that are presented by massive
rebuilding of the socioeconomic infrastructure.
This paper presents actual and projected damage arising from the Mount Pinatubo eruptions, their
implications for Central Luzon's development, and broad directions that could be taken to respond to
the calamity. This report is neither comprehensive nor complete, as the calamity is still ongoing.

The overall impact of the Mount Pinatubo eruptions
is the slowing down of the region's growth
momentum and alteration of key development
activities and priorities. The calamity can,
however, be taken as an opportunity, in which
rehabilitation and reconstruction can aid in
regional development. Specifically, rehabilitation
and reconstruction should:
