Teaching Life Skills to

Students with Autism

By: Shannon Horan

Definition: Autism is a complex neurobehavioral disorder characterized by challenges with social
skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication as well as by unique strengths and
differences.

❏ There is not ONE Autism. Autism runs on a “spectrum” due to the fact that there are many
types caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences.

❏ The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that Autism affects every 1 in 68 children in
the United States.
❏ This also includes 1 in every 42 boys and 1 in every 189 girls.
