Motivation

• I applied at BARC ( Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) which was

situated in Mount Abu for project training in the month on January.

•I got a call from the office for an interview and then submitted all
the required documents necessary.

OBJECTIVES

•The main objective of this project is Study and up keeping of tactic Gear
Drives. Mainly they use spur gears.

•In this report we will also cover mainly classification of gears, various
terminologies used in gears, various methods to manufacture a gear, ,types of
breakdown .

•We will also cover what are the various gear materials used and the analysis
of gears.

GEAR
•A gear or cogwheel is a rotating machine part having cut teeth, or cogs, which mesh
with another toothed part to transmit torque.
Gears can be classified mainly as:
•Parallel gears
1. Spur Gears : simplest form of gears having teeth parallel to the gear axis .
contact of two teeth takes place over the entire width along a line parallel to the
axes of rotation.
2. Helical Gears: Gear teeth are part of helix . The mating gears will have same
helix angle but in opposite direction for proper mating .

3. Rack and Pinion: In these gears the spur rack can be considered to be spur gear of
infinite pitch radius with its axis of rotation placed at infinity parallel to that of
pinion. The pinion rotates while the rack translates.

• Intersecting gears:
1. Straight Bevel gears: Bevel gear is shaped like a right circular cone with most of
its tip cut off. When two bevel gears mesh, their imaginary vertices must occupy the
same point. The angle between the shafts can be anything except zero or 180
degrees. Bevel gears with equal numbers of teeth and shaft axes at 90 degrees are
called miter gears.

2. Spiral Bevel Gears: Bevel gears with curved tooth lines. Due to higher tooth contact
ratio, they are superior to straight bevel gears in efficiency, strength, vibration and
noise. On the other hand, they are more difficult to produce. Also, because the teeth are
curved, they cause thrust forces in the axial direction. Within the spiral bevel gears, the
one with the zero twisting angle is called zerol bevel gear.

• Non intersecting Gears:

1. Worm and Worm wheel: The Worm Gears are used to connect skewed shafts, but not
necessarily at right angles. Teeth on worm gear are cut continuously like the threads on
a screw. The gear meshing with the worm gear is known as worm wheel and
combination is known as worm and worm wheel .

•Advantages and Disadvantages of Gear Drives
• Advantages:
• It has high efficiency
• It may be used to transmit large power
• It has compact layout
• It has reliable service

•Disadvantages:
•Since the manufacture of gears require special tools and equipment, therefore it is
costlier than other drives.
•The error in cutting teeth may cause vibrations and noise during operation.

•Terminology used :
•Pitch Circle

•Dedendum(b)
•Clearance(c)
•Module
•Gear Ratio

• Gear Manufacturing: Gear manufacturing basically is categorized based on the
type of gear to be manufactured:
1. Gear Milling: Initial and best known and metal removal process
2. Gear Hobbing: Continuous generating process in which the tooth flanks of the
constantly moving work piece are formed by equally spaced cutting edges of the
hob
3. Gear Shaping: Gear shaping is a generating process.
4. Bevel Gear Cutting : Bevel gear cutting is a very specialized area in the field of
gear cutting.

Gear Materials: Numerous nonferrous alloys, cast irons, powder-metallurgy and

plastics are used in the manufacture of gears. However, steels are most commonly
used because of their high strength-to-weight ratio and low cost. Plastic is
commonly used where cost or weight is a concern. advantage of the use of plastics,
formerly (such as in the 1980s), was the reduction of repair costs for certain
expensive machines.

Discussion

• In the present study the spur gears have been modelled and analyzed using Ansys
parametric design language (APDL) in finite element analysis software.
• This APDL program used to analyze different gear materials. In this work
composite, polymer and steel gears are taken to perform the analysis on different
speed conditions. The Stress distributions, deformations and strains were obtained
using finite element analysis software. An APDL program is developed to plot a
one pair of teeth in contact.

•Types of Breakdown faced in TACTIC gear boxes:

1. Loosing of pinion and motor:
2. Cracking of pinion:
3. Non-Smooth Drive:

Results
• Analysis spur gears are carried out:
•Stress value in composite gear is less compared to peak gear which improves the
efficiency of the gear.
•From the graph between Stress and Depth of contact/thickness it could be
concluded that the maximum stress occurs in the tip of the gear teeth.

CONCLUSION
•Through this project I can conclude that gears play a vital role
•In this the gear tooth contact analyses in spur gears through
finite element analysis was carried out. A general finite element model
was developed for evaluating the contact stress in spur gears
•I also figured out the stress distribution pattern of the individual gear
after loading.
•From the research experience, by diagnosing the root cause of gear
failure, one can conclude the solution for the problems faced by the
gearbox manufacturer as well as the idle time, revenue loss and
manufacturing loss This report reflects my level of understanding gears
that makes the assembly part of tactic telescope
