Integration of Technology in

Instruction

Chapter 1
TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN
THE DIGITAL AGE
Teacher, student, and instruction
have been constant entities of
education from several centuries
back until the present time.
However, strategies, style, and
educational tools and technologies
improve in many generations for
better delivery of the lesson and
learning of content.
Teaching and learning is a
journey in education that we
treasure most. It is not only the
‘matter’ or the ‘what to teach’
that is important but the ‘manner
of delivery’ or the ‘how to teach’
plays a very important role
today.
Also, it is not only the ‘matter’ or
the ‘what was learned’ that is
significant, but the ‘quality or the
authenticity of learning’ where
students become life-ready.
Which of these illustrations define educational
technology in the old days?
TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

• Disseminate information through

lectures.
• Require students to memorize
contents from textbooks.
TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

• Make use of textbooks and

workbooks as their reference.

• Give assessments through written

examinations.
TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

Focus on their responsibility and

relationship with the students as
recipients of knowledge.
TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

• Followers of policies prescribed

by the school.
• Use lecture as teaching
method.
TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

• Deliver the same lessons every

year.

• Too focused on self-achievement.

TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

• Target to finish the lesson within the

period.

• Autocratic in which teachers are in

control of everything in all events of
the classroom.
TEACHERS OF YESTERYEARS

• Holder of
knowledge/Gatekeeper of
information.
• Technology illiterate
Which of these illustrations show learning in the
old days?
STUDENTS OF YESTERYEARS

• Receiver of facts and

information
• Learning is based on repetition
• Textbook users
STUDENTS OF YESTERYEARS

• Passive recipients of information

• Competitive learners
• Factual thinkers
• Unilateral thinkers
STUDENTS OF YESTERYEARS

• Inactive process of learning

• Dependent learners
• Single Taskers
• Single sensory input provider

Interactive lecture
A means of instructing whereby the
teachers actively involve the students in
their learning process by way of regular
teacher-student interaction, student-
student interaction, use of audio-visuals,
and hands-on demonstrations. The
students are constantly encouraged to
be active participants.
Case-based learning
Engages students in discussion
of specific scenarios that
resemble or typically are real-
world examples.
Problem-based learning
Is a student-centered
approach in which students
learn about a subject by
working in groups to solve an
open-ended problem.
Inquiry-based learning
Is a form of active learning that
starts by posing questions, problems
or scenarios. It contrasts with
traditional education, which
generally relies on the teacher
presenting facts and his or her
knowledge about the subject.
Project-based learning
Is a teaching method in which
students gain knowledge and
skills by working for an extended
period of time to investigate and
respond to an authentic,
engaging, and complex
question, problem, or challenge.
Simulation
Means role-playing or rehearsal
in which the process of teaching
is carried out artificially.
Role play
Is a technique that allows
students to explore realistic
situations by interacting with
other people in a managed way
in order to develop experience.
Experiential learning
Is a process through which
students develop knowledge,
skills, and values from direct
experiences outside a
traditional academic setting.
Laboratory work
The Laboratory Method is
used to designate a teaching
procedure in the physical
sciences that uses
experimentation with
apparatus.
Peer tutoring
Is a teaching strategy wherein
students are paired together to
practice academic skills and master
content.
E-learning

Is learning utilizing electronic

technologies to access
educational curriculum
outside of a traditional
classroom.
PISER (Peer Instruction and Student
Electronic Response)
A structured teaching practice
that requires students to
examine their own and their
classmates’ reactions to and
analysis of the content, is a
simple yet effective way to
engage students.
