ARTICLES

• Articles are used in front of nouns.


1. The article a
• A is used in front of singular nouns which begin with consonant sounds ( b, c, d, f, g ,
etc ).
• A is used only for singular countable nouns.
Example : a) There is a rat under the table.
b) We want to buy a car for my mother.
c) There is a zoo near my uncle’s house.
d) My brother studies at a university* in England.
e) He has only done a unit* in his workbook.
*The words unit and university begins with a consonant or “y”
so the article a is used.

2. The article an
• An is used in front of singular nouns which begin with vowel sounds
( a, e, I, o, u ).
• An is used only for countable nouns.
Example: a) An ant fell into my coffee.
b) She saw an elephant at the circus.
c) Mrs Rajaratnam is an Indian lady.
d) Please meet me in an hour’s* time.
e) She bought an umbrella in the shop.
* The word hour begin with a vowel sound so the article an is used.

3. The article the


• The is used in front of nouns ( singular, plural, countable and uncountable ). It is used
when we speak about specific person, thing, place or country.
• The is also used when we speak about something or someone for the second time.
• The is used in the superlative form.
Example: a) We can see the moon now.
b) A hunter shot a tiger. The tiger had killed many goats.
c) The biggest cake won the prize.

4 Omission of the article.


• The article a and an are left out for uncountable nouns.
• Example: a) He wants sugar in his tea.
b) He likes to eat rice.
c) There is butter on his bread.
