ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS OF UKRAINE

 Ukraine is suffering
many environmental
problems.
 Many of them have
been caused by
economic activities.
WATER POLLUTION

 The Dnipro and others

rivers are in danger
 They are filled with
poison: industrial waste,
all kinds of chemical
elements and
pesticides.
 The emissions destroy
fishing industry and
lead to a damage of
wildlife.
POLLUTION OF THE SEA OF AZOV
 The next ecological problem
is the problem of the Sea of
Azov.
 It is such a small sea, it
becomes dirty very easily
 Many industrial centres
such as Mariupol,
Berdyansk pour into the sea
all kinds of chemicals.
AIR POLLUTION
 Every year Ukrainian
industry pollutes the
atmosphere with tons of
dust and other harmful
substances.
 The waste gases cause acid
rains.
 The air pollution also causes
the greenhouse effect
POLLUTION FROM CARS

ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS IN UKRAINE

 Campaign for
environmental
protection is supported
by public organizations
and individuals.
 Among the leading
environmental
organizations in Ukraine
are the Greenpeace and
the Green Party.
THE UKRAINIAN GREEN PARTY
 The Ukrainian Green Party is very active today.
 “Zeleny Svit” is the Ukrainian ecological newspaper.
 It calls on people to protect the natural wealth and to
use it in a more careful and economical manner for
the benefit of the present and future generations.
CHORNOBYL DISASTER
 The 1986 Chornobyl disaster
happened on the 26th of April at
1.23 am, when a powerful
explosion destroyed the 4th power
block of the nuclear power plant
 The Chornobyl incident was the
reason for the most terrible
radiation emission in world's
history.
 This caused serious social and
economic problems for the
population of the former Soviet
republic
POLLUTED TERITORY

 The territory was

polluted with radioactive
substances.
 A great damage has
been done to the
agriculture, forests and
people's health.
COMPARISON TO HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI

 The radiation that escaped

in Chornobyl was four
hundred times the amount
that was released by the
atomic bomb that was
dropped over Hiroshima
and Nagasaki at the end of
Atomic bomb mushroom clouds over
Hiroshima (left) and Nagasaki (right)
World War II.
EVACUATION

 About 100,000
people had to leave
their
homes immediately
after the explosion
VICTIMS OF THE ACCIDENT

 31 people were killed as

a direct result of
the accident.
 30 more died
of radiation sickness
due to the blast.
THE LIQUIDATORS

 The liquidators were

primarily young men from
military service, students
and miners.
 The liquidators remains
unknown but the
government officially
recognize only 60000.
PRYPYAT, THE TOWN OF
THE POWER PLANT WORKERS
 Prypyat, founded in
1970 as the town of the
power plant workers,
has become a ghost
town.
 Before
the disaster 50,000
people lived in modern
apartment buildings.
A GHOST TOWN

 Today Prypyat is
completely deserted with
cars still parked on the
streets. Radiation
levels are still so high that
nobody will be able to live
here for the next one to
two hundred years.
27 YEARS AFTER THE DISASTER

 27 years after the

disaster the cleanup of
Chornobyl is still going
on. There is still almost
200 tons of radioactive
material stored in
the sarcophagus, which
was built in only six
months after the
explosion in 1986.
RADIOACTIVE FOOD
 The population in the area is still in danger.
Greenpeace claims that thousands of Ukrainians are
eating food that is radioactive
 The environmental organization says
milk, mushrooms and berries in the whole region will
stay polluted for many decades to come.
NATURAL LABORATORY

 Many scientists
recommend that the
governments should
turn this place into a
wildlife haven – a
natural laboratory
where they can study
the long-term
consequences of this
kind of accident.
 One of the scientists
said, ”If people were
more careful in
general, the accident
would never have
happened. Let’s try
and be more careful
at least now and not
jump to
conclusions.”
THE PROBLEM OF DEFORESTATION

 The rate of the

deforestation in the
world is alarming. Every
day a hectare of the
world's forests is being
destroyed forever.
REASONS OF DEFORESTATION:
LAND AND WOOD

 In many countries the  In other part of the world

HUMAN IMPACT
IN THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS.

 There has been several thousand years of human

impact in the Carpathian Mountains.

increasing every year.  Because of the process
 It becomes a big of deforestation not only
problem for Ukraine. mountains but our
country is in danger.
CAUSES OF DEFORESTATION
 Deforestation in the mountains has as large of an
impact on the mountain's local weather and climate
as global climate change. When you deforest, you
increase rainfall. The decreasing levels of rainfall and
rainy days is because of deforestation. The increasing
rate of soil erosion is also because of deforestation.
IMPOSSIBLE REPLACEMENT OF TREES

 Unfortunately, in most places the trees won't be

replaced. The soil in the forests is very thin, but
it is protected by the trees. When trees are cut
down, the soil is washed away by the rain or
blown away by the wind.
DESTRUCTION OF WILDLIFE
IN CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS
 When we destroy the
forest, we lose not only
the trees but the homes
of millions of animals
and plants together with
them.
HEALTH IMPROVEMENT

 Trees in the mountains

are not only important
for nature but for people
too.
 Walks through the
forests are great for
health improvement.
 After spending only an
hour in a forest, you
may feel better!
POSITIVE EFFECT OF FORESTS

 Forests and trees

produce positive effect
on the brains; the level of
sugar in the blood goes
down and the level of
oxygen in it goes up.
WHO IS GUILTY OF DEFORESTATION?

 The answer is simple: all of us. There are just

too many people in the world. The world's
population is now over one billion people.
 It's very easy to blame the local people. We
don't chop down trees. They do. But the
products are bought by people like you and me.
BEAUTY OF TERNOPIL

 Ternopil is a beautiful
city in Western Ukraine.
It is located on the
banks of the Seret
River. Ternopil is also
famous for its lake. It is
located in the heart of
the city.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS OF TERNOPIL
Ternopil as any other cities has a lot
of environmental problems
 The living conditions in our city
are getting worse and worse.
 Exhaust fumes and smoke from
the factories are polluting the air
and trees are being cut down.
 Furthermore, the river and lake is
being polluted by chemicals from
the factories;
 people are suffering from
breathing difficulties and
stomach problems.
DIRTY BEACHES

 Our beautiful lake is not clean enough.

The beaches around it are dirty too.
AIR POLLUTION OF TERNOPIL

 Each year atmosphere gets

harmful substances from
transport. The number of
automobiles in Ternopil is
growing from year to year,
and ecologists predict that
in some years it will plunge
in smoke. The best way to
reduce the threat of air
pollution get people to use
more public transport.
PROBLEM OF WASTE

 Waste is a problem of a
big city
 It recently began to get
huge values because
the development of
industry is accompanied
by growth of industrial
waste.
LITTER LASTS

41
NOVEMBER 2009
 The greatest problem of
Ternopil is the garbage
 Residents of the village
Malashivtsi didn’t allow to
bring and throw garbage near
their village.
 In November 2009 the
garbage was not taken from
the city for about a month.
EPIDEMIC OF FLU

 If garbage is left too

long people can even
catch diseases from it.
They say that the
epidemic of flu at that
time was caused by
this problem.
REDUCING OF THE AMOUNT OF WASTE
Local Authority has to require
industry and the public to
make efforts to reduce the
amount of waste by:
 encouraging recycling;

 reducing wasteful packaging

of products;
 introducing products that are
more environmentally
friendly.

SOLUTION

 There must be much more green plants in the

town.
 The traffic must be limited

 To get the plants and factories out of the city

 There must be strict government and local

control on the pollution in our city.
