PREPARATION

OF A SPEECH
Public Communication is the most recognizable
to anyone. Where the speaker talking to a group of
listeners. Public communication requires preparation,
which may take only a few minutes an in
IMPROMPTU SPEECH or as long as one week, two
weeks or a month as in EXTEMPORANEOUS
SPEECH.
Preparation means, first, finding what the
speaker already knows about the topic, then sourcing
the information through research.
The speaker then organizes the speech
according to the purpose of the speech. It decides
what information goes into the speech and what
does not.
The first thing to be decided on preparation of
a speech for a public communication is the Purpose
of Speech. From the purpose will flow the writing of
the speech and the decision as to the Manner of
Delivery of the Speech.
THE TYPE OF
SPEECH
ACCORDING TO
PURPOSE
The speaker creates a speech based on purpose
s/he wants to achieve. These purpose are called the
Goals of Speech. The speaker through the speech can
make one think, change one’s mind or smile or laugh.
The purpose of speech are studied in order to
deepen one’s knowledge and learn how to apply them
in one’s own speech. The three types of speech
according to purpose are: Exploratory or Informative,
Persuasive and Entertainment.

Exploratory / Informative Speech
• to provide information history, theories, practical
applications etc., that can and will help the listeners
understand something that unknown to them or
already know to them but not yet clearly understood.
• A speech of this nature is meant to help the listeners
understand a topic in a more in-depth manner.
• The example of this speech is the lectures of your
teachers.
An Exploratory or Informative Speech must follow
these guidelines:
• it must have a message prepared at the level of
knowledge of the speaker
• it must be tailored to fit the level of knowledge of
the audience
• and most importantly, it has take into account
the age, gender, social status, religion and
cultural affiliation of the listeners.
Persuasive Speech
• This is a speech whose goal is to change the
Listener’s opinion, attitude or belief regarding a
certain topic by providing materials that can or will
help convince the listener.
• It provide the audience with favorable or acceptable
ideas that can influence their own ideas and
decisions.
• The example of it is the campaign speeches of the
running candidate for government posts.
The Persuasive Speech must follow these
guidelines:
• It must have a Message at the level of the
knowledge of the speaker
• It must be tailored to fit the level of knowledge of
the audience
• And it has to take into account of age, gender,
social status, religion and cultural affiliation of the
listener.
Entertainment Speech
• The purpose is NOT only to tell a series of jokes.
Neither is it the purpose of the speaker to have the
audience laughing throughout the speech. To make the
listeners smile or feel lighthearted after the speech is
enough.
• It can also be highly entertaining to engage in word
play like puns, and giving funny meanings of acronyms
or anagrams.
• The humorous speeches of comedians and performers
are the example of this type.
Although it is an Entertainment Speech, it must still
follow these guidelines:
• It must be prepared at the level of knowledge of
the speaker
• It must be tailored to fit the level of knowledge of
the audience
• And it has to take into account the age, gender,
social status, religion and cultural affiliation of the
audience
