 Description
 An outline is a “blueprint” or “plan” for your paper. It helps you to organize your
thoughts and arguments. A good outline can make conducting research and then
writing the paper very efficient. Your outline page must include your:

 Paper Title
 Thesis statement
 Major points/arguments indicated by Roman numerals (i.e., I, II, III, IV, V, etc.)
 Support for your major points, indicated by capital Arabic numerals (i.e., A, B, C, D,
E, etc.)

 Roman numeral I should be your “Introduction”. In the introduction portion of your

paper, you’ll want to tell your reader what your paper is about and then tell what
your paper hopes to prove (your thesis). So an Introduction gives an overview of the
topic and your thesis statement.

 The final Roman numeral should be your “Conclusion”. In the conclusion, you
summarize what you have told your reader.

 Following are two sample outlines, from actual student papers. YOUR outline can
be MORE detailed, or might be LESS detailed. Remember that a good outline
makes writing easier and more efficient.
Good morning my friends! I would like to
introduce myself. My name is Fiolina. I am
eighteen years old. I was born on February 16,
1998. My address is at Banyu Urip street No.
357, Pringsewu. I am the student of S1
Computer Engineering at Technology Institute
of Sumatera. I usually go to campus at 08.00
AM and come home at 04.00 PM. My hobbies
are watching horror movies, travelling to
tourism objects, and listening to music. I am
friendly, easy-going, and hard-working.
Zoey is one of my friends at campus. She
always gets up at 04.30 in the morning. After
that, she tidies up all the things, prepares
breakfast, and gets ready to work. At 07.00,
she has to leave home and go to work in order
not to come late. She usually finishes working
at 16.00. Right after she leaves her office, she
goes to campus. All classes that she takes
begin at 17.00 and 19.00. She studies at
campus until 20.40. When she arrives home,
she usually goes sleeping and does similar
activities on the next day.
Hi, my name is Erika. Let me tell you about
myself and my family. I am the first daughter
of three siblings. I have one younger brother
and one younger sister. As you see, I am tall,
bright-skinned, and have short hair. My
younger brother is Harry. He is tall, bright-
skinned, and has short hair. My younger sister
is Fiolina. She is slim, bright-skinned, and has
long hair.
First of all, turn on the tap and wet your
hands. After that, apply soap, wash your
hands, and clean your fingers. Next, rinse
your hands until they are dry. Finally, apply
lotion for better protection.
 Create the outline of the following paragraph!

I disagree if children work and I think it is a true

problem faced by our country. We see children selling
newspapers, becoming street singers, and even beggars
who work from morning until night. This condition will
of course influence the children’s growth in many
aspects. There are some solutions that in my opinion
will significantly help the children; (1) put the children
in a dormitory where they can spend their time for
studying and other activities that are relevant with
their ages. All of their living costs are financed by the
government, (2) the government must create more job
opportunities for the societies, and (3) give a warning
to the parents and put them in the jail if they ignore it.
There are no parents who love their children let the
children work underage.
