Introduction
• Heliodisplay is an upcoming technology used for
displaying images in mid air.
• Heliodisplay was invented by Chad Dyner.
• An interactive free space display developed by
IO2 technologies.
• In the heliodisplay, a projector focuses the image
onto a layer of mist in mid-air, resulting in a two-
dimensional display that appears to float
Introduction
History
• Displaying an image using conventional projectors
requires a non-transparent medium, like-screen,wall.

PRINCIPLE
• “Frustrated Total Internal Reflection”(FTIR)
Cont…
• A heliodisplay runs on particles already present in the
air.
• Particles in the air are converted into nearly atom-
sized particles, and are re-emitted upward through a
dozen metal plates.
• These particles are held together by surface tension
and form a cloud that can act as a screen.
• By changing the molecular properties of this
cloud, the qualities of the image, like brightness and
sharpness, can also be changed.
Cont…
• Heliodisplay transforms water in to a unique screen
of fine vapor, suspended in mid air to create nearly
invisible screen in to which any image can be
projected.
Models
• M1
-The original M1 units produced by IO2 were
advanced prototypes and proof-of-concept, but a few
were sold to early adopters.
• M2
-The second-generation M2 Heliodisplay supports a
30" image with 16.7 million. The interactive M2i
version includes virtual touchscreen capability.
• M3 and M30
-The new third-generation M3 is said to be much
quieter, with improved brightness and clarity and
more stable operation with an improved tri-flow
system.
• Models
-M1:
M1 units produced by IO2 were advancedprototypes
-M2:
The M2 Heliodisplay supports a 30" image with 16.7 million colours
and a 2000:1 contrast ratio.
-M3 and M30:
M3 has the same basic specifications as the M2 but is much
quieter, with improved brightness and clarity and more stable
operation with tri flow technology. The M30 is the updated version
of the M3
-M50 and M100:
The M50 has a 50" diagonal image, equivalent to displaying a life-
size head-and-shoulders person and the M100 has a 100" diagonal
image, equivalent to displaying a large full-body person.
Key Features
• Life-Size interactive images floating in air.
• No other additives or chemicals are needed only plain
tap water is necessary..
• Similar to other display darker the ambience brighter

HELIODISPLAY
Cont….
• Images can be seen up to 75 degrees off aspect
similar to lcd screen.
• Viewing requires no special glasses or any other
background or foreground screening.
• Turn on and off with one click
• Pass objects, people through the image.
• L-90 can be placed on the ground upright or on a
desktop.
• No additives or chemicals are needed but only
plain tap water is required.

HELIODISPLAY
Negative Aspects
• Needs controlled lighting for best working
conditions..
• Images becomes less visible under bright light
• Wind and bright light interferes with image visibility..
• Expensive….
Specification
• 1024 x 768 resolution, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios
• 3D compatible

HELIODISPLAY
Advantages
• No screen to project images
• Device is light weighted and can be converted into a
furniture
• Nothing is added to air. Nothing affects the air quality
• Projected images and videos are two-dimensional, but
appear 3d since there is no physical depth reference
• Heliodisplay doesn’t create fog, so no electronic
devices in the room are affected.
• Heliodisplay can be used in any country since it works
on 95-115 or 220-240V AC
• No special glasses required to see the display
• Translucency is controlled by the heliodisplay

Proposed applications for the
real-world Heliodisplay include:
• Advertising and Promotion, e.g.: trade shows; in-
store displays; museum, movie and casino displays;
theme parks.
• Collaborative Decision Making, e.g.: board meetings
and presentations; air-traffic control; military
command and control; architectural and engineering
design; teleconferencing.
• Simulation & Training, e.g.: virtual targets; pre-
operative planning; virtual surgery.

HELIODISPLAY
Cont…
• Consumer, e.g.: video games; home theatre.
• Heads-up displays in new fields, e.g.: a patient's vital signs
could hover above the chest during open heart surgery.
• Build one into a door jamb and have a walk through image or
virtual privacy screen.
• An in-store end cap advertising display and demonstration
through which the customer can reach and grab shown
product.
• Build the Heliodisplay into furniture, e.g. project from desk
Conclusion
Heliodisplay is a good projection unit which does
not require any special hardware and support videos
and jpg images ,flash, quicktime etc..This unique
technology, developed by a former architect ,creates
one of the most convincing open-air holographic like
images in existence.
Several other thin air-displays are available but
heliodisplay outclasses them, because of the attention
it draws and its maintainability, and as a result it has
more market value. Its various application suggest
that its future scope is very bright.
