OEE – The Most Common Metric
 Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the most
common metric for production equipment
 It is a simple performance indicator that tells you
 Is a machine producing as much as it can?
 It is the ratio of actual good parts produced vs. what
could have been produced under ideal conditions
 OEE = Actual / Ideal
 It can be used to compare the performance
between two or more machines, lines, sites, etc.

You need OEE … as a start

Managing OEE Means Managing Cost

If you want to: You must: And that will result in:

Increase OEE Reduce: Reduced: Increased:

• Availability • Downtime • Unit costs • Production

• Performance • Unproductive • Material costs • Revenue
• Quality time • Labor costs • Profitability
• Cycle times • Capital costs
• Scrap

This is where the And the will

OEE ≠ Performance Improvement

 OEE is effective at measuring some key things:

 Overall Effectiveness and its 3 components
 Progress over time
 Comparative performance of machines / lines

 OEE data alone does not identify root causes which leads to improvement
 Your objective is not just to measure, but to improve
 You need detailed, machine-specific data to uncover the causes of
inefficiency
 OEE tells you the what but not the why and the how to resolve it

You need more than OEE to improve OEE

Production/Performance Report Example
• OEE and 3 its components (Uptime, Throughput, Quality)
• Production counts – Total, Good, Scrap
• Available time, Downtime, Running time
• Up to nine dimensions are available for reporting
• Date/time, Plant Model, Shift, Part ID, 5 user-defined fields
• Three are used here: Plant Model (Line/Work Cell), Date/Time (Date/Hour), Shift

Event Report Example
• FactoryTalk Metrics excels as
an Event Tracking System
• A standard Event pareto report
– Identifies which Events are
causing the most inefficiency
• Event Data tells Why and How
– Why a machine is inefficient
– How it is spending its time
– How its efficiency can
improve
• Event Data is necessary
determining root cause – and
for process improvement
• Collection of Events is
configurable and unlimited

Configurable Report Parameters
• Report parameters are
exposed and configurable
• Time filtering
• Plant model filter
• Data filters
• Pareto filters
• Grouping fields –
change report layout
• Terminology and
language
• Encourages ad-hoc
reporting by users
• Reduces/eliminates the
