What is Engine?

 One form of energy is converted to mechanical work.

 Examples: Heat engines, electric motors, pneumatic motors.

Process Cylinder
External combustion (E.C.) Engine:

 combustion of fuel take place outside of the cylinder.

 convert the water or other low boiling temperature fluid into steam and
steam is used to run turbines.
 used in driving locomotive, ships, generation of electric power etc.
Internal Combustion (I.C.) Engine:

 combustion of fuel take place inside the engine.

 One working fluid.
 Small and simple in size
 Heat losses are less
According to number of strokes

Two stroke Engine

 completes a power cycle with two strokes of the piston during only one
crankshaft revolution.
 high torque compare to four stroke engine
 Used in motor bikes, pumping sets etc.
Four Stroke

 piston moves two times up and down inside the cylinder and complete two
crankshaft revolutions during single time of fuel burn.
 high average compare to two stroke engine.
 used in cars, truck etc.
According to fuel used:

Diesel engine:
 uses diesel as the fuel.
 used in trucks, buses, cars etc.
 No spark plug is needed.
 45% efficient.
Petrol Engine

 uses petrol as the fuel.

 are used in bikes, sport cars, luxury cars.
 Spark plug is needed
 30% efficient.
According to design of engine:

Reciprocating engine (piston engine)

 the pressure force generate by combustion of fuel exerted on a piston due to
which piston starts reciprocating motion.
 reciprocating motion converts into rotary motion by use of crank shaft.
 generally used in all automobile.
Rotary engine (Wankel engine)

 a rotor which frees to rotate

 developed by Wankel in 1957.
 This engine is not used in automobile in present days.
