Qualitative Research

Nature of Qualitative Research

• Qualitative research examines the quality of
relationships, activities, situations, or materials. It
stress more on whole explanation. It pursues a linear
track, tells a language of “variables and hypotheses”
and focuses on assessing variables and analyzing
hypotheses that are associated to general
fundamental descriptions (Neuman, 2007).
Characteristics of Qualitative Research
• The biological setting is an immediate source and vital
element.
• The concentration of qualitative research is on the
participants’ ideas and feelings. (Cresswell, 2013)
• The methods are collaborative and stresses on
individual’s dignity and worth.
• It utilizes different ways of gathering data.
• Researchers are involved with how things happen.
Activity
• What else can I do to get myself ready in life?
• How do I feel about where I am so far?
• Identify pictures, or other symbols that describe who
you are. Select several and explain what you chose
and why you chose it.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
• In-depth interviews-seem like an exchange of
dialogues, but with pre-determined answer
classifications. Interviewers must have an exceptional
listening expertise, and skilled at individual
communication, outlining of questions and analytical
for explanation. Audio recording materials can be
used to copy for evaluation and clarification that may
last for 45 minutes to several hours.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
Focus groups-includes seven to ten or six to eight persons,
who are unacquainted with one another and have been
chosen because they have particular features that are
appropriate to the research problem. The interviewer
makes an accommodating environment, inquires questions
in order to boost conversation and the extractions of
opposing views. It usually takes about 30 minutes to
several hours. You may also use audio recording materials
to translate the analysis and interpretation of data.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
Observation-noting of happenings, actions and
objects in the actual setting. There are two types of
field-notes in 1) Observation notes – information of
observed happenings and 2) Reflective notes –
researcher’s understandings about
background/procedure of observation and
investigative thoughts.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
• Films, Videos and Photographs-these present
the visual records of events, based on the view
of the filmmaker or videographer. In contrast,
pictures reveal the hobbies and beliefs of the
photographer.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
• Content analysis-demands for organized
evaluation of methods of communication to
document arrangements accurately-as exhibited
in letters, emails, minutes of meetings, policy
statements and a lot more.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
• Participant Observation-calls for involvement in
the biological setting of the research
participant/s throughout a period of time where
the researcher participant is capable to examine,
understand, and feel the actual life by
accomplishing activities and interact with one
another.
Methods of Collecting Qualitative Data
• Narratology-it pertained to any verbal or printed
story. Narrative review involves understanding
between the participant and researcher.
Activity 2
For your INDIVIDUAL research questions, select a
qualitative method, provide:
1. Rationale for your choice of topic
2. Methods of collecting data
3. Limitations of this method for your study
