The students after these lectures will be able
to have a fundamental understand of the
purpose of mobilizing funds from the public and offering a
premium in return.the banks subsequently invest the
mobilised funds in profitable ventures and share a perceage of
the earnings with the depositor as interest /or profit othe
amount. The various liability products as they are called are
offered to the public.. The following Types of accounts ,the
transaction features

- The features of different accounts
- The procedure for opening bank account
The funds are mobilized by the banks from the Public by
opening different bank accounts. in the name of the
customers which are payable on demand
All such accounts where customers place credit balances are
treated as “Banks Liabilities” as they have to be paid backto
account holder as & when the customer demands
The funds thus deposited are classified on the basis of
tenor,& account operation in the following categories;
-Current Accounts
-Savings Accounts
-Fixed or Term deposits Accounts
-Special Purpose Accounts
Current Deposits Accounts
(Business accounts)
Features & characteristics
Mobilization of deposits in shape of such accounts for
facilitate business transactions ;
Current accounts in banking allow deposits and
withdrawa reciepts and payments for internal and
external debt remittances and other service transactions
,withdrawals are made without any restrictions in
balance of payments .
The current accounts are opened primarily for promoting
business operations, sales & purchases for the business
houses companies/used for settling claims ,merchandize
trade, exports and imports

Features & characteristics
-Bank does not pay any return to the depositor as in
case of savings/term deposit accounts.
-Amount Payable on demand(to the customer) up to the
Extent of available credit in the respective account/or
approved overdraft arrangements in favor of the said
account
-The accounts holder has to maintain a minimum credit
balance in the account..
-No restriction of transactions in a day .
-Service charges are levied in case of not maintainig
minimum credit balances
-Treated as Current Liabilities

Savings Deposit.Accounts
Purpose & History.Objectives: -
The savings accounts were introduced / Initiated in
undivided India under Post Office savings Bank in
1882. In Pakistan the Savings account were
Instituted under the Trustees Savings Bank Act
1863 to mobilize & encourage the habit of savings
among people of small means, household women,
children etc.
The account holders are given a premium as
interest /profit on their funds thus saved
.

Features
-The account can be opened with a minimum initial
credit balance :
-Accounts can be opened in personal & joint
names(4) & in the name of Clubs & societies with a
minimum credit balance
- A specified amount is payable to the account holder
twice a year as ‘Interest’ ‘Profit
- Number of transaction in the account are restricted
to twice a week as per policy.
- Initiated in undivided India under Post Office savings
Bank in 1882
S/B account Features:
- Accounts can be opened with a minimal amount by
individuals ,& in joint names by persons 18 years of
age & above as well as in the name of minors by
their parents /guardians.
- Cheque book issued for making withdrawals by the
bank after the ID verified from NADRA
- Profit computed on a flexible rate under the
conventional and Islamic banking system & payable
to customer on a monthly /yearly basis.
- No restrictions on withdrawals
- Notice /intimation prior to withdrawal of specified
amount insisted by some banks
Accounts are popular due to Simplicity of
procedure .Current & part as Term liabilities
Fixed Deposits/Term Deposits
Features;
Funds received from the customers are accepted/placed
for a specified duration/period of time, varying from;
Three months to five years.
Withdraw able upon maturity
Profit rate is variable & linked with the duration.
A receipt is issued to the depositor
Amount of profit/interest paid to the account holder on
encashment or on monthly basis is per policy /or the
terms of deposit.
Treated as Time liabilities

Premature Withdrawal/Payment
- A certain amount is deducted from the profit,
As service charge.
- Profit Rate calculated on the lower side
- Limitation;
- Profit on the Fixed deposit ceases on maturity
Unless renewed
- Deposits can be made in individual & joint names
-Terms of payment in accordance with the respective
account rules.
Non Resident Accounts
Description & nomenclature
- The non residents accounts are opened for non
permanent residents
- Non Resident Accounts (N.R.A) Maintained in Pak
Rupees in the names of
-Pakistani ,& Foreign Individuals
- Accounts can also be opened in the names of Firms,
companies ,
- Residing or operating outside Pakistan
Non Resident Accounts; Pak Rupee
Regulatory reasons:
- Account can sometimes be set up within an orphan
structure to avoid regulatory restrictions, such as
nationality f ownership of specific assets
