Network SIS Architecture

Caterpillar: Confidential Yellow 3

Introduction
• Network SIS is a browser based web application.
• Network SIS software installs within a dealer’s central store or within a satellite store.
• Network SIS installs on a standalone server for parts counter users.
• A dealer may determine that Network SIS is beneficial for the parts counter as a backup or as a
standalone configuration
• The setup that follows is for an intranet or LAN setup.
• The Network SIS user (a client) would access Network SIS by choosing the appropriate URL
shortcut (computer name and port number) assigned to the Network SIS server. More than one
Network SIS application can exist within a dealership based on the software subscription. The
installation that follows does not include the hardware configuration or security steps necessary to
set up the Network SIS application over the internet or WAN.
• Network SIS software files require 12GB on an upgrade and 15GB on a new install of hard disk
space.
• The database also requires a DVD tower or 150GB of free space be available so the database can
update information.
• If more than one hard drive is available on the server, it could be beneficial to install the software and
DVD data on different drives. This could speed up access to Network SIS.
• This Network SIS Setup Guide can be downloaded at the SIS Training website at the following
address: https://dealersystems.cat.com/sis/.

Configuration Settings: Data Location
• Drive/Folder to hold SIS data
• Drive must have >150 GB free

• Select the mapped drive containing SIS Data.

For example: a parts counter person may have two mapped network drives. If the dealer has Network SIS
installed on a server for all SIS users and Network SIS installed for the parts counter; the parts counter
person would map the Network SIS server drive, the parts counter server drive and their own DVD drive.
SIS Network will not license if installed on flash drive.

Setting up CBT with Network SIS
If Network SIS is the SIS data source in STW, the network administrator must perform the
following steps each data load (monthly) to make CBT information available to users:
1. Run the SIS Setup DVD on the network server as usual
2. Go the drive where the SIS data was installed and the open the “appfiles\CBT” directory
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Caterpillar\appfiles
3. Double-click on each of the two self-extracting zip files in the directory, cbtdata.exe and
datasets.exe, to extract the CBT data to the correct directories. Extract in order listed.

Each user must perform the following steps to make CBT information available:
1. In STW Launchpad, select the View Menu and the Preferences menu item
2. Select the SIS Preference tab
3. Select Network as the Connection Type
4. In the Data Location box, select or enter the mapped drive letter for the server drive that
contains the “appfiles\CBT” directory described above and click the OK button
