What is Blu-ray disc?

A Blu-ray Disc (also called BD) is a high-density

optical disc format for the storage of digital
media, including high-definition video.

u A single-layer Blu-ray disc, can hold up to 25

GB of data -- that's more than 4 hours of high-
definition video or about 13 hours of standard
video.
uA double-layer Blu-ray disc can store up to 50
GB, enough to hold about 9 hours of high-
definition video or more than 23 hours of
standard video.
What is High Definition Video?

high-definition movie, which has a much

clearer image (How Digital Television Works),
takes up about five times more bandwidth
and therefore requires a disc with about five
times more storage.
Blu-ray disk offers 1080p video resolution.

HDTV video quality that far surpasses any

other medium or broadcast format available
today.
Evolution of package media for movie

VHS: analog
DVD: digital
BD: high-definition
Enables recording,
rewriting, and
playback of high-

Why the name comes as Blu-ray
disc?
In this DISC, for reading and writing we are
using blue-violet laser. The name is combination
of ³BLUE´ (blue-violet laser) and ³RAY´ (optical
ray).
The first blue laser was developed in 1996 by
Shuji Nakamura (Nichia Corporation).
In 2002, an alliance was formed, called the Blu-
ray Disc Association, including the likes of Sony,
Samsung, Sharp, Hewlett-Packard, and Royal
Phillips
The ³e´ is intentionally left out of the name due
to trademark restrictions.
Specifications of BD

 Laser Wave length 405 nm

 Lens numerical aperture 0.85
 Cover thickness 0.1mm
 Disc diameter:120mm
 Data transfer rate:36Mbps
 Video recording format:MPE½-2
 Audio recording format:AC3, MPE½1
How to increase a capacity of a Disc?

Principle:
Recording capacity of a optical disc is
determined by Spot size. which is directly
proportional to NA of light and inversely
proportional to wavelength.
Capacity=(NA/wavelength).
Capacity of Blu-ray disc

Laser wavelength is
405nm
Numerical Aperture is
0.85
Using 0.1mm thickness
layer
Numerical Aperture measures
the ability of a lens to gather and
focus light. As the numerical
aperture increases, the focusing
power increases and the beam
size decreases
Building of Blu-ray disc

1.Placing of
data on 1.1mm
layer.
2.Recording
layer is closer to
lens.
3. 0.58,1.32 and
2.1micro mtr
Clear picture
Blu-ray construction

In DVD
1.Two disks are
molded.
2.Recording
layer is added to
one of the disk
3.Two disks are
glued together
Avoids birefringence

Track pitch is 1.6micron 0.74micron 0.32micron

Enhancements

 A hard coat was

derived of an
ultraviolet-curable
resin that has a
scratch resistance
 An artificial
fingerprint reagent
(AFP fatty oil and
in organic particles)
is placed on the
disc surface to
resist fingerprint
oils
Enhancements
Error rates increased in reading and writing after the
original BD suffered scratches and fingerprints
For protection, the prototype BD was enclosed in a case
The case increased the size of the disc drive
Protection System

Uses the Data Encryption Standard (DES)

that has a key length of 56 bits
o A Key and Disc ID are written into the
ROM area to prevent illegal copying
Variety of BDs and Cost
 BD-ROM, read only formats
 BD-R, recordable once
 BD-RE, rewritable formats
 Recorder Cost: $1,500 - $2,500;
 BD Cost: $26
 Player Cost:$500
Advantages
 §aximum picture resolution
 Largest capacity available anywhere
Over 9 hour of HD video on a 50 GB disc.
About 23 hour of SD video on a 50 GB disc
 Best audio possible
 Backward compatibility
Broadest industry support from brands you trust
 Disc robustness
Applications
Supporting

More than 180 different companies are

supporting this format .
apple,
Dell,HP,Sharp,Sony,Samsung,L½,Hitachi
 Worlds largest Video ½ame manufactures
